* fix(packaging): three MSIX first-run regressions found by a real sideloadChristophe Besson13 days2-9/+87
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A second-machine sideload of the MSIX target surfaced three things the earlier verification round (which only proved the package installs and runs) had missed: 1. meshbay-node missing from PATH. installer.nsh's customInstall adds node-runtime\ to HKCU\Environment at install time -- an unelevated per-user write, never blocked by MSIX's no-elevation rule, only by the more basic fact that an AppX/MSIX install runs no custom code at all. packaging/win/ensure-node-path.ps1 (idempotent, no admin verb) plus main.js's winEnsureNodeOnPath() do it from the app itself instead, once per launch, shipped to Full and MSIX (not Light, nothing to add there). Verified live via the Node inspector protocol: the entry was in HKCU\Environment\Path after a launch, absent before. 2. A daemon that crashes on startup failed silently. spawnNodeDetached() used stdio: 'ignore', so a real crash reproduced live (a second instance colliding with the first on 127.0.0.1:18000) left waitForNode()'s generic 60s timeout as the only failure ever shown. spawnNodeDetachedWatched() pipes stdio and watches ~2.5s, rejecting immediately with the daemon's own stderr on an early exit; a survivor has its streams released and runs fully detached exactly as before. First version bounded the captured text by line count and a live test showed that cut the actual OSError line -- two uvicorn/asyncio tracebacks followed it in the real capture -- so it is bounded by characters instead. 3. No hint that a startup-mode choice exists. The install-time radio page was the only place this was ever offered, and nothing replaces it now that no install-time page can exist at all. SetupWelcome (the existing first-run banner) grew a conditional hint, shown only while a bundled node is present and neither autostart nor service mode is configured yet. Considered and rejected: linking straight to the Node page -- its route is gated on a linked hub node key, false on the exact fresh-install screen this hint targets, so the link would have been dead on arrival. New key setup.node_startup_hint, added to all ten locale catalogues. test_packaging_win.py gained six tests pinning all three (69 total). Full plan and verification detail: C:\Users\admin\devel\msix-installer.md section 13 (out of repo). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(packaging): an MSIX target for Microsoft Store submissionChristophe Besson2026-09-117-2/+50
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Store certification of the NSIS "MSI/EXE" submission failed on three checks (silent-install verification, Add/Remove Programs entry, bundleware check) -- traced and reproduced live to one cause: SmartScreen blocks an unsigned, internet-downloaded installer at the shell layer before Microsoft's own unattended validation bot ever gets to run it. MSIX sidesteps this class of failure entirely: submitted through the Store's native pipeline, there is no browser-download-then-launch step for SmartScreen to intercept, and Microsoft signs the package itself at publish time -- free, and specific to this submission type (Trusted Signing remains a paid service for the MSI/EXE path). Full plan and findings: C:\Users\admin\devel\msix-installer.md (out of repo). electron-builder.msix.yml carries the same bundle as Full (node runtime, ffmpeg, both service scripts) -- an AppX/MSIX install never elevates, by design, but that changes only *when* the two elevated operations can run, not whether the daemon ships. No main.js changes were needed: the on-demand elevation path for service-mode (winElevateServiceMode(), driven from the Node page) already existed for a different reason and depends only on service-mode.ps1 being present as an extraResource, true for any packaged Windows target. identityName/publisher/publisherDisplayName are the real values from Partner Center's app-identity reservation, not placeholders. build-win-msix.ps1 points electron-builder at the system Windows 10 SDK (auto-detected) instead of letting it download its own bundled copy -- that download's 7z extraction creates symlinks this target never uses and fails without SeCreateSymbolicLinkPrivilege, reproduced on this machine. build/appx/ carries the four tile images the AppX target requires regardless of showNameOnTiles, generated once from the existing app icon (see that directory's README) since the system-SDK redirect has no vendor samples to fall back to. build/appx-extensions.xml declares windows.startupTask by hand rather than via electron-builder's addAutoLaunchExtension, which always targets the Electron shell -- this points at the bundled node binary instead, matching what "starts at sign in" already means for Full. Verified live via a signed sideload install (self-signed test cert, cleaned up after): the package installs and the app runs correctly. One finding worth carrying forward -- the declared network capabilities (internetClientServer, privateNetworkClientServer) do not create any firewall exemption for this app, most likely because automatic capability-based exemption is an AppContainer-sandbox property and this app deliberately runs full-trust, outside any sandbox. Not a regression: no install-time elevation was possible either way, so the cost is the same one-time OS firewall prompt firewall.ps1's own header already documents as its fallback today. * feat: gate the create-group wizard on whether a node is bundledChristophe Besson2026-09-112-7/+47
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | MeshBay Light has no bundled meshbay-node.exe, so the create-group wizard (which assumes it can start a local node) needs its own signal, not just platform.node.available. main.js exposes it over IPC (node:bundled) by checking the packaged resources directory rather than trusting a build-time constant; preload.js and platform.js carry it through the usual contextBridge/wrapper path. winCanElevateServiceMode() replaces the two prior 'app.isPackaged' checks for whether the app can offer service-mode elevation -- Light is packaged but has no service-mode.ps1 to elevate into, so packaged alone was already the wrong test even before this target existed. create-group-page.js gates the wizard step that starts a node on the new capability instead of hiding the whole feature; node-page.js's comment fix is unrelated cosmetic drift caught in the same pass. * feat(packaging): a Light installer target with no bundled node runtimeChristophe Besson2026-09-112-1/+69
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | MeshBay Light ships the Electron client + UI only -- no PyInstaller node freeze, no ffmpeg, no service install/autostart. Two standalone electron-builder configs (Full via package.json's build field, Light via electron-builder.light.yml passed with --config, which reads only that file -- confirmed against app-builder-lib's own config loader) rather than one config branching on a flag. build-win-common.ps1 holds the steps both orchestrators share (Node check, npm ci, Electron bump, sync-ui) so build-win.ps1 (Full) and the new build-win-light.ps1 cannot drift apart; build-win.ps1 is refactored to dot-source it with no behavior change (rebuilt and diffed byte-identical output). installer-light.nsh keeps the one thing Light still needs -- an unconditional firewall rule, since the client listens too -- and none of the service-mode/autostart machinery installer.nsh carries, which has nothing to gate without a bundled node. dist-light/ (Light's own electron-builder output dir) gets its own .gitignore line since the bare dist/ rule does not match it. * feat(packaging): one radio page for Windows autostart, firewall every mode0.13Christophe Besson2026-09-111-43/+131
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Operator feedback on the 0.13.0 installer: - The all-users / current-user page (electron-builder's PAGE_INSTALL_MODE) only ever showed "anyone who uses this computer" disabled -- MeshBay is per-user only (account-bound keystore/DPAPI, MESHBAY_DESIGN.md 11.2) and build.nsis forbids elevation. customInstallMode forces $isForceCurrentInstall so the page is skipped. - The two nested Yes/No MessageBoxes are one nsDialogs radio page (customPageAfterChangeDir): only-while-open / at-sign-in / background service, default background service. customInit seeds MB_AutoMode "2" for silent installs where the page never runs. "At sign-in" now writes the Startup .vbs from the installer (meshbay-node autostart install, unelevated); the old per-user branch set up nothing. - The firewall rules go in for every mode, not behind a second opt-in -- a node that accepts no connections is the failure mode MESHBAY_DESIGN.md 7.5 names. Folded into the service elevation for mode 2; their own single elevation for 0/1. Unelevated short-circuit kept but narrower: firewall.ps1 check AND service.ps1 status must both pass to skip mode 2's UAC. Var MB_AutoMode lives inside customPageAfterChangeDir, not at file scope: the uninstaller compile pass inserts none of the macros that read it and makensis -WX turns "unused Var" (6001) into a hard error. Not yet exercised on a real machine -- the NSIS UI cannot be driven from the build env. test_packaging_win.py pins the script shape. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(hub): pin the app controls while a library scrollsChristophe Besson2026-09-101-1/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Files, Videos, Music and Photos are read by scrolling, and everything that steers that reading left with the first screenful. Three bands now pin under the navigation bar, in a group and on the Search page alike: the tab bar (the search field, on Search), the application's own toolbar, and the file table's column heads. The group's name and description still scroll — they say nothing a reader needs while walking a directory, and the height they would cost is height the list does not get. A band's offset is the heights of the bands above it, and those are not constants: the toolbar wraps to three rows on a phone, grows a field while a folder is being named, and loses its filter on Search. So each band measures itself and publishes `--chrome-h` / `--toolbar-h` (static/sticky.js) and the stylesheet does the arithmetic in calc(), rather than a number written down twice — the fault CLAUDE.md already records against this layout twice over. A band publishes height *plus its own bottom margin*, and paints that margin as a ring of page colour, so the pinned layout is pixel-identical to the flow layout and nothing shifts at the moment a band pins. Three overflow faults came out of it, all of the same class and all of them what "the header does not stay" actually meant on Android — a document wider than the screen leaves everything pinned attached to a viewport the reader can no longer see, the navigation bar included: - a directory's name cell was a bare <td>, so an unbreakable folder name (`Rage_Against_The_Machine_Discography_1992-2000_FLAC`) set the column's minimum: a 527px table in a 390px window - Search's group column did the same at 442px with an underscored group name. It also goes entirely below 768px, where there is no room for it and the breadcrumb already names the group - the shared-directories table has four columns of controls with a combined minimum near 440px, none of it compressible. On a phone the row stops being a row: the name and its eject/remove pair on one line, the two switches — each carrying the column head's own string as a label — on the next - and, found by measuring at 360px, the tab bar itself was 19px too wide `.file-table` moves to separated borders: a collapsed border belongs to the table rather than to the cell, so the column heads lost their rule the moment they pinned. Measured, not read. tests/harness/sticky_header_probe.py drives the shipped GroupPage and SearchPage against a stub node, walks to each application, scrolls to the end and reports every rectangle — 11 views x 4 widths x 2 engines. Its fixture says what real data says: the first version used `note-007.txt` and `un groupe`, which fit any screen, and found none of the above. A fixture narrower than real data tests the fixture. Also: `test_desktop_shell` no longer looks for the CSP after the first `-->`, which made it fail on correct markup as soon as a comment was added above it, and `search-page.js` joins test_hook_ordering's file list. * fix: the PDF preview needs object-src and frame-src, in both policiesChristophe Besson2026-09-091-1/+19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A PDF preview showed the "this browser will not display the PDF inline" fallback everywhere — in the desktop client since its first launch, and in the browser since the hub started sending a CSP on 2026-09-01. It read as a missing native feature because before that commit the hub sent no policy at all, so Chrome had once worked and the application never had. Two directives govern one feature. `files-app.js` decrypts the file in the page and hands it to `<object type="application/pdf">` from a Blob; Chromium loads that as plugin data (`object-src`, absent and therefore falling back to `default-src 'none'`) and then renders it in an internal frame (`frame-src`). Opening either alone changes nothing visible — the second refusal produces the same fallback. `'self'` covers neither: a same-origin `blob:` URL is not matched by it in either directive, measured in Chrome 152 against the deployed page and in Electron 44 against the client's own policy. `plugins` stays at its default `false`: the built-in viewer is not behind that flag on Electron 44, verified by rendering one. Widening `object-src` from `'none'` to `blob:` admits only what page script minted itself, at a type this code sets — PDFium parsing bytes that came from a node, which is what any browser does with the same file once downloaded. Tests: each policy is pinned to carry `blob:` in both directives (each fails if either token is removed), and the two policies are now held identical directive by directive apart from the two deliberate differences — the comment claiming they were the same had already drifted and nothing checked it. The CSP source parser in test_desktop_shell.py read `//` comment lines as directives, which is the "parse directives, not text" mistake this file already records; it skips them now. * feat: MNP 3.0 — a transfer needs a leaseChristophe Besson2026-09-092-3/+71
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Stage 4 of ~/next/improve-downloads.md, the flag day. Leases become compulsory and a 2.x peer is refused at the handshake. **The bound on leaseless reads (§3.4.1) did not exist, and it is what makes the rest mean anything.** Browsing a group is never subject to a transfer slot — that is an operator decision and a requirement: a member must be able to browse a group at capacity exactly as they browse an idle one. But "not leased" cannot mean "unbounded", or a client that simply omits `tr` transfers outside every cap and the caps are decoration. A session may now read two distinct files at once without a lease: one because a viewer looks at one file, two so that prefetching the next photo stays possible. A count of files and not a byte budget, because a RAW photo is 60-80 MB and is browsing while a 40 MB archive is a download, and no size threshold separates them. Thumbnails, posters and cover art never reach this check at all — they resolve out of the node's own cache. It is a fairness control among cooperating clients, in the company of `max_concurrent_streams`, and is not a defence against a member determined to saturate a node's disk. That member is a member, and the answer to them is `member revoke`. **MNP_VERSION and MNP_MIN_SUPPORTED both move to 3.0**, on both sides. The messages are additive; the requirement is not. An opt-in switch would leave a leaseless branch reachable on every node, which is finding C6's lesson — a transport that accepted a bare JWT — one feature later. **The desktop client now checks before it connects.** The SPA is served by the hub and picks up a new client on reload; the application ships its own interface, so an un-updated one would sign in, list groups, and fail every connection with `version_too_old` — a refusal in a protocol vocabulary with nothing anyone can act on. It asks `/v1/hub/version` for `client.minimum` and says so plainly instead. An unreachable hub is deliberately *not* "too old": a captive portal or a closed laptop must not make starting the application impossible. **Every package is aligned on 0.13.0.** `meshbay-client/package.json` had drifted to 1.0.0 while the Python packages were on 0.12.0 — invisible until something compared those numbers, and then load-bearing: an installed client announcing 1.0.0 sorts above a 0.13.0 minimum and walks through the gate meant to stop it. That is stated in the code rather than left to be rediscovered; it is acceptable exactly once, because the operator is updating every client, node and hub by hand for this flag day. A new test fails if two packages ever disagree again, and another fails if the hub would refuse the client the tree builds. Node suite 1209 passed, hub suite 861 passed. * fix(client): write a download to .part and rename it when it completesChristophe Besson2026-09-081-4/+36
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | `save:abort` deleted a cancelled download, but nothing covered the application being quit, killed or crashing mid-transfer: the write stream was abandoned and a truncated file kept the final name — the exact thing save:abort's own comment calls worse than no file at all, because it looks complete to whoever opens it next. Downloads go to `<target>.part` and are renamed after the stream has flushed, which is the convention the node already uses for uploads (`_do_file_upload`). A crash now leaves a self-evidently unfinished file. `before-quit` also clears any `.part` still open, synchronously — it does not wait for promises — so a deliberate quit leaves nothing at all. Verified by hand: .part during the transfer, survives SIGKILL, renamed on completion, and gone after a cancel or a clean quit. * feat(client): create the system tray at launch, not on first minimiseChristophe Besson2026-09-082-2/+33
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ensureTray() was reachable only from the window:minimize-to-tray handler, so the indicator did not exist until you had already hidden the window into it. That is backwards on both desktops — most of what a tray is for is finding an application that is not in front of you — and on Windows it read as the app having no tray presence at all. Created during app.whenReady(), after registerBridge() and before createWindow(). The order matters: buildTrayMenu reads the nodeService that registerBridge assigns, so the other way round puts the Start/Stop entry on the menu one five-second poll late. The menu's labels were the one thing that came *from* the minimise call, since the main process has no i18n. A new tray:labels IPC (platform.setTrayLabels) carries them instead, sent from the renderer's boot once initLocale() has a catalogue; a language change reloads the page, so the same call covers it. The window between launch and that first message shows TRAY_FALLBACK, in English. §5.10's two platform gates become one — trayOS() in main.js, which every tray path calls. test_desktop_shell.py's existing test is rewritten against it and two are added: the launch ordering, and that no tray path tests process.platform inline instead of calling the gate. Windows still files a new tray icon under hidden icons until the person drags it onto the taskbar. No API promotes it; documented in WINDOWS-PORT.md §5.11 rather than worked around. * fix(client): break the Wayland ready-to-show deadlockChristophe Besson2026-09-071-0/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some Wayland compositors never schedule a first paint for an unmapped surface, but the window stays unmapped until show() runs, which was gated entirely on that paint's ready-to-show event — a cycle with no way out on its own. Observed under GNOME/Mutter on a VM whose virtio-gpu device fails command-buffer creation. Add a bounded fallback show(), guarded on isVisible() so it's a no-op once the event has already fired normally and doesn't steal focus back from whatever the person switched to. * fix(win): finish the desktop setup flow — node-key link + service taskChristophe Besson2026-09-051-1/+51
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Two independent breaks in the Windows first-run path: - node:start's win32 branch never linked the node's Ed25519 key to the hub account, so the daemon sat at waiting_for_account and the Create Group wizard span on "Detecting local node…" for ever — the only way through was pasting the key by hand on the Profile page. The Linux branch has always done this inline; factor it into linkNodeKeyAndAwaitRunning() and call it from win32 too. PUT /v1/users/me/node_key overwrites, so this also recovers an account still carrying a previous machine's node key. - service.ps1's install branch did `$action = New-ScheduledTaskAction`, shadowing its own [ValidateSet(...)][string]$Action parameter (PowerShell variable names are case-insensitive). The CimInstance was coerced to the string "MSFT_TaskExecAction", Register-ScheduledTask -Action rejected it, and "background service" mode never created the task — reproduced live. Rename the locals to $taskAction / $bootTrigger / $taskPrincipal. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(client): system tray on Windows, and a clearer tray iconChristophe Besson2026-09-054-8/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The tray's Start/Stop already drove nodeService.status/stop/restart, which had full win32 branches for both startup modes from the Node page work -- so enabling it on Windows is widening two platform gates (the `tray` capability in preload.js, the window:minimize-to-tray handler in main.js), not new logic. Replaced the tray icon: the previous white chevron-in-a-box read as an envelope at tray size. New icon is a small "M" drawn as mesh nodes and edges, echoing the app icon's own motif, in the brand blue instead of plain white so it stays legible on both light and dark taskbars/panels. * feat(client): tray menu starts and stops the node, and a clearer iconChristophe Besson2026-09-053-22/+77
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The first icon was an arrow dropping into a receptacle, which is the download glyph -- a vertical stem above a container reads that way whatever the context. Replaced with a window folding a chevron into itself: no stem, and the frame says which object is being minimised. Applied to both the nav button and the panel indicator, which carried the same wrong shape. The menu now offers Start or Stop for the node daemon, chosen from its actual state and shown only when there is a daemon to act on: `supported && installed`, so a machine with no node installed gets no entry rather than a control that fails when used. `restart` is the start verb -- systemd's restart starts a stopped unit, and there is no separate one to call. The three service handlers become named functions so the tray drives exactly what the Node page drives, instead of a second copy of the systemctl and Task Scheduler branches. A read of the state that throws is treated as no control at all. The menu is rebuilt on a 5s timer while an indicator exists, and again straight after an action. libappindicator has no "menu is about to open" event, so a menu built once would show a stale Start/Stop for the life of the process; `systemctl --user show` costs a few milliseconds. Locales: tray.start_node / tray.stop_node in all ten. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01DtfG7z6wHWj8RKHCvxQtY1
* feat(client): minimise to a system tray indicator (GNOME)Christophe Besson2026-09-054-5/+70
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A dedicated monochrome button in the nav, immediately left of the notification bell, hides the window to a tray indicator. Linux only for now; Windows is being done on that OS, and the capability is declared per platform so the button never appears where the desktop shows no indicator -- there it would hide the window for good. Hides, never closes: `window-all-closed` quits the app, so closing here would make "minimise" mean "exit" and drop the session, the transfers and the node connection. `second-instance` now calls the same restore path, since focusing a hidden window does nothing visible. The context menu is not decoration. Under libappindicator -- how GNOME shows a tray at all, via the AppIndicator extension -- `tray.on('click')` never fires; the indicator only opens its menu. A tray whose sole affordance was a click would be inert on the one desktop this targets. The click handler is kept for desktops that do send it. Menu labels come from the renderer with the IPC call: the locale files are the interface's, the main process has no i18n, and a second string table is how two of them start disagreeing. English fallbacks if none arrive. The icon lives in src/, not build/: package.json `files` packages only `src/**` and `ui/**`, so an icon under build/ is present in a dev run and missing from every installed one. Monochrome, stroked, matching the nav glyph. Verified on this host: Ubuntu GNOME with ubuntu-appindicators@ubuntu.com and libayatana-appindicator3 present, so the indicator has somewhere to appear. Not yet run end to end. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01DtfG7z6wHWj8RKHCvxQtY1
* fix(win): graceful shutdown, one startup-mode control, and a stray-\r bugChristophe Besson2026-09-051-6/+46
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Windows-only changes, all found by actually running the previous session's work rather than by review alone: - CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT/LOGOFF/SHUTDOWN handler (platform.py, ctypes SetConsoleCtrlHandler) so closing a console window, signing off, or a system shutdown runs the daemon's real _shutdown() instead of Windows just ending the process — closing WebRTC sessions and any in-flight ffmpeg transcode instead of orphaning it. `taskkill /F` itself stays uncatchable (like SIGKILL), so autostart_run() now spawns with CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP instead of DETACHED_PROCESS and autostart_end() tries CTRL_BREAK_EVENT against the recorded pid first, falling back to the hard kill only if that doesn't stop it in time. - Replaced the Node page's two independent autostart/service-mode toggles with one "start automatically" select (off / at sign-in / as a background service). The old pair let both be active at once — starting the daemon twice, at boot and at sign-in — and their layout broke wrapping inside .node-service's flex row. The new control always removes whichever mechanism is active before installing the target; platform.py's service_install() does the same on the CLI side. The "background service" option disables itself (with a hint pointing at the CLI) when running unpackaged, since service-mode.ps1/service.ps1/firewall.ps1 all assume an installed build's layout — verified live rather than assumed by actually running those scripts unelevated. - findNodeBinary() no longer bakes a stray \r into resolved paths. Found by rebooting after enabling per-user autostart: where.exe listed two matches, and stdout.trim().split('\n')[0] only strips the whole string's ends, leaving line one's own trailing \r attached — which landed inside the Startup .vbs's quoted path and broke it with "Unterminated string constant" at boot. Fixed by splitting on \r?\n and trimming every line. - Dependency audit for the Windows installer (docs/WINDOWS-PORT.md): no VC++ Redistributable needed, confirmed by inspecting the built node-runtime's actual import table rather than assuming. New docs/windows-build.md: a concise clone-to-installer build guide. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(client): a Node-page toggle to switch into/out of service modeChristophe Besson2026-09-052-0/+65
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The installer's own mode question is effectively one-shot: customInstall skips it entirely once the firewall rules already exist, for any reason -- and per-user mode sets those up on its own, with no Scheduled Task involved. So declining once (or the rules existing from something unrelated, as happened on a dev machine this session) was a dead end: no reinstall, repair, or uninstall/reinstall cycle could ever bring the question back, since uninstall defaults to leaving both alone. Add the other door in (and out): a checkbox on the Node page, next to the existing per-user autostart toggle, wired main.js -> preload.js -> platform.js -> node-page.js. It runs packaging/win/service-mode.ps1 -- the exact script installer.nsh already runs -- via one Start-Process -Verb RunAs elevation, so the two paths can never disagree about what service mode means. The elevation helper writes a tiny param()-based .ps1 to %TEMP% so the target script path and its arguments bind through real PowerShell parameters instead of nested string-quoting. Also fixes a real pre-existing gap found while checking this: 8 of the 10 locale catalogues (all but en/fr) were missing the autostart/service-mode keys added in an earlier commit this session (b782886) -- test_locales.py's key-set-parity check uses a for-loop with an inline assert, so it stopped at the first mismatch (fr) and never actually reached the other eight. Backfilled all five keys (three pre-existing, two new) in de/es/it/ja/nl/pl/pt-BR/zh-CN. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(packaging): bundle ffmpeg in the Windows installer by defaultChristophe Besson2026-09-051-1/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | winget install ffmpeg was considered and rejected as the mechanism: it needs network access and winget/App Installer present at the exact moment setup runs, and its failure mode is silent -- video just does not stream, with nothing pointing back at ffmpeg. Not viable for a non-technical install. MeshBay transcodes browser-incompatible video to H.264 (-c:v libx264, webrtc_server.py) -- a real encode, not remux -- so this needs a genuine GPL ffmpeg build; no LGPL-only build includes an H.264 encoder, since libx264 itself is GPL. packaging/win/fetch-ffmpeg.ps1 (new) Downloads, checksum-verifies and stages ffmpeg for the build. Source: BtbN/FFmpeg-Builds' Windows x86_64 gpl-shared preset -- shared DLLs rather than two independent static binaries, which is what nearly tripled this: the "full" static build many devs already have via winget is ~220 MB *per executable*. Pinned to one dated release tag (immutable once published) and its own sha256, not the "latest" alias BtbN repoints on every auto-build -- verified by hand first (downloaded, hash matched, ran a real encode+probe with libx264) before pinning. ffplay.exe (an SDL2 player, ~17 MB) is dropped; MeshBay never invokes it. Cached after the first build. Runs its own smoke test (encode + probe a real clip) so a broken fetch fails at build time, not for the first user who tries to watch something. packaging/win/LICENSE-ffmpeg.txt (new) GPLv3 notice + where the corresponding source is, required because this redistributes a GPL binary even though it is unmodified and only ever invoked as a subprocess. Ships alongside ffmpeg.exe in the installer. build-node-runtime.ps1 / build-win.ps1 Bundling is now the DEFAULT, replacing the old opt-in -FfmpegDir (which copied from a local directory and left most builds without ffmpeg at all). -SkipFfmpeg opts out for a smaller, streaming-less local-iteration build. Also fixes a real bug the ffmpeg change exposed rather than caused: the final `--help` smoke test did `$help -notmatch "meshbay-node"` against $help captured as a PowerShell ARRAY (one element per line) -- -notmatch on a collection is a FILTER, not a boolean test, and returns the non-matching elements; any non-empty array is truthy in if() regardless of content. Once --help wrapped past one line (it now does, with autostart/service in the verb list) this threw unconditionally. Fixed by joining to one string before matching, and pinned by a new test so a future edit cannot silently reintroduce the collection-vs-scalar trap. Verified: downloaded and hashed the pinned release by hand (matches), ran a real libx264 encode + ffprobe against the extracted build, fetch-ffmpeg.ps1 end to end (161 MB staged), a full build-node-runtime.ps1 run (308 MB node-runtime/) and a full installer build (MeshBay-Setup- 1.0.0.exe, 210.8 MB with ffmpeg bundled). Node suite 850 pass / 25 skip. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: opt-in Windows service mode (boot-time, one elevation) + v1.0.0Christophe Besson2026-09-043-44/+145
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The per-user Startup-folder launcher (W3) only ever runs after this user signs in. A real Windows Service would start earlier, but under LocalSystem/NetworkService -- accounts with no normal profile, so %LOCALAPPDATA%\meshbay\ (config, keystore, data) would not exist for it. Relocating storage to make that work is real surgery, deliberately not done here. Instead: a Scheduled Task, created once with admin rights, that runs AS THIS USER at boot without needing them to sign in first. `schtasks /create ... /ru <user> /rp ""` with no `/it` registers an S4U (Service For User) logon -- no password stored anywhere, and unlike LocalSystem it loads this account's own profile, so config_dir()/ data_dir() need zero changes. The cost: S4U carries no network credential, which the node never needed -- everything it touches is local disk plus outbound internet. Creating the task needs admin (a boot trigger touches system-wide scheduler state, the same reason /sc onlogon needed it); querying/starting/stopping an existing one does not -- Task Scheduler grants the owning user that much itself, which is what lets the Node page's Start/Stop/Restart drive it with no further UAC prompts. meshbay_node/platform.py service_install/_remove/_status/_run/_end -- mirrors autostart_* but for the Scheduled Task; TASK_NAME moved here (was decorative before) meshbay_node/daemon.py new `service install|remove|start|stop|status` verb; restart-daemon and reset now check for the service task too packaging/win/service.ps1 the installer-side equivalent (extraResource); status/run/end never self-elevate -- only install/remove do, exactly matching what Task Scheduler itself requires packaging/win/service-mode.ps1 ONE elevated helper running service.ps1 + firewall.ps1 together, so choosing service mode costs exactly one UAC prompt, not two build/installer.nsh the install-time choice: "run as a background service?" (one elevation, both jobs) vs the existing per-user + separate firewall question. Checked first, unelevated, so re-running setup with everything already configured asks nothing. Uninstall offers the matching one-elevation cleanup, default No. src/main.js winServiceTaskStatus/Run/End, wired into node:installed, node:service-status/-stop/-restart and node:start: when the Scheduled Task exists, drive it; otherwise fall back to the existing per-user spawn/kill path. This is the hard requirement -- Start/Stop/Restart from the Node page must work in either mode. node-page.js / locales a hint explaining why the per-user autostart toggle is absent when service mode is active (info.mode from the backend, no new field to gate on -- it just isn't sent in that case) package.json: 0.1.0 -> 1.0.0. Verified: electron-builder compiles the new NSIS choice logic and ships all three scripts; service.ps1's S4U install fails cleanly (Access denied) when run unelevated, and its status/run/end never touch "runas". Cannot verify the elevated success path myself (no admin in this session) -- that needs a real UAC click. Node suite 843 pass / 25 skip; test_packaging_win.py pins the one-elevation property, the S4U flags, and that main.js actually checks the service task in all three handlers. * fix(client): Stop/Restart buttons and an autostart toggle on the Node pageChristophe Besson2026-09-041-2/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Root cause of both reports: node:service-status's `installed` field was winAutostartInstalled() -- whether the Startup-folder launcher exists -- not whether the daemon can be managed at all. The Node page gates Stop/Restart on `installed`, so with no autostart configured (the default -- nothing installs it automatically) those buttons silently never rendered, leaving only Start. A perfectly manageable daemon looked unmanageable because a different, unrelated setting was off. installed now reflects the actual daemon binary (findNodeBinary()), same definition node:installed already used; autostart moves to its own field carrying what installed used to mean. That field also fixes the other half: there was no way to turn autostart on except the CLI. NodeServicePanel now shows a toggle-switch next to Start/Stop/Restart, wired through a new platform.node.autostart (install/remove) that mirrors the existing service.* pattern -- the preload/main.js bridge (W3) was already there, just never called from the interface. English and French strings; other locales fall back to English per the project's own stated policy (test_locales.py's own docstring). Verified: node --check on every edited file; hub/node suites green (863 pass, 0 fail — pre-existing test_locales.py encoding failures on this Windows checkout are unrelated, reproduced identically on the clean tree). * fix(client): a failed spawn() of the node no longer crashes the appChristophe Besson2026-09-041-0/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | spawnNodeDetached() and the Linux dev-mode fallback in node:start called spawn() with no 'error' listener. A spawn failure -- bad path, a stale PATH entry, antivirus interference -- is delivered on that event asynchronously; with nothing listening, Node rethrows it as an uncaught exception and takes the whole Electron main process down with it, instead of the caller's own waitForNode() timeout turning "never came up" into a clean message. Hit directly: ENOENT spawning a stale dev-venv meshbay-node.exe (not the installed one -- where.exe correctly resolves to the bundled exe now). Whatever the trigger, a daemon that fails to start must never be able to take the renderer down with it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(packaging): re-running setup no longer re-prompts for firewall accessChristophe Besson2026-09-041-13/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Every run of customInstall showed the "Allow MeshBay through Windows Firewall?" question and, on Yes, a fresh UAC prompt -- an upgrade or repair install would ask again even with all four rules already in place. customInstall now checks first: firewall.ps1 check, unelevated (Get-NetFirewallRule needs no admin, only New/Remove do), exits 0 if every rule already exists. Only a nonzero result reaches the MessageBox and the elevated add. A second run of setup on an already-configured machine now asks nothing. Verified unelevated: check exits 1 and logs which rules are missing on a machine with none of them (the fresh-install case); electron-builder compiles the nsExec::Exec / Pop $0 / ${If} wiring. Node suite 837 pass / 25 skip. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(packaging): offer one elevated firewall step instead of two dialogsChristophe Besson2026-09-042-4/+42
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Installing used to mean clicking through two separate Windows "Allow access" prompts later — one for MeshBay.exe, one for meshbay-node.exe — each confusing on its own and worse before the exe carried a version resource. Adding a firewall rule needs admin, and the installer is deliberately per-user with no elevation, so this can only ever be opt-in. packaging/win/firewall.ps1 (new, shipped as an extraResource at resources\firewall.ps1): idempotent add/remove of the two inbound UDP rules ("MeshBay", "MeshBay Node"), grouped, logged to %TEMP%\meshbay-firewall.log. Locates both executables from its own path, no arguments needed beyond the action. build/installer.nsh: customInstall asks "Allow MeshBay through Windows Firewall now?" and runs firewall.ps1 via NSIS ExecShellWait "runas" — one UAC prompt — only when not ${Silent}; declining or dismissing UAC falls back to Windows' own per-process prompts, unchanged. customUnInstall offers the same in reverse, defaulted to No (a stale rule for a deleted exe is inert, so this should not nag on the way out) and skipped for a silent uninstall. Verified: rebuilt MeshBay-Setup-0.1.0.exe (electron-builder compiles the new LogicLib.nsh / ExecShellWait NSIS successfully); firewall.ps1 run unelevated fails cleanly into its log ("Access is denied") rather than silently doing nothing, confirming the fallback path. Node suite 835 pass / 25 skip. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(client): publish the real local IP on every platform, not just win32Christophe Besson2026-09-041-10/+16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Chromium replaces host candidates with random `<uuid>.local` mDNS names. aioice has no mDNS resolver on any platform: it logs `Remote candidate "<uuid>.local" could not be resolved` and drops the candidate. Concealment therefore does not degrade for us, it deletes the only LAN-routable candidate and leaves reflexive pairs -- which fail whenever both peers are behind the same NAT, because that pair needs the router to hairpin. Measured with a Linux client and a node in a libvirt guest: exactly one pair formed, host -> srflx on a shared public address, five binding requests, zero responses, FAILED after 63 s. The same log shows a peer on the guest's own subnet succeeding in 24 ms with a real-IP host candidate. 5022f2b scoped this to win32 from a session where the guest ran the *client*, so the condition encoded "the machine being debugged" rather than "the peer is a node". The peer is always a node, on every platform. The trade is that our private address reaches the hub and the node in the SDP -- the user's own infrastructure, not an arbitrary page. * feat(packaging): put the bundled meshbay-node on the per-user PATHChristophe Besson2026-09-041-5/+33
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The installer had no console entry point, so running the CLI meant cd-ing into resources\node-runtime\ every time. installer.nsh now adds that dir to HKCU\Environment\Path on install and removes it on uninstall, via stock WordFunc.nsh (electron-builder's NSIS bundle has no EnVar plugin). It points at the real meshbay-node.exe dir — not a shim — so `where meshbay-node`, findNodeBinary and the W3 autostart launcher all resolve to the same binary. A WM_SETTINGCHANGE broadcast nudges open shells; new ones just work. Rebuilt: electron-builder --win nsis compiles the WordFunc includes fine, MeshBay-Setup-0.1.0.exe (155 MB). test_packaging_win.py covers the add/remove symmetry. * feat: Windows installer (W4) — one per-user NSIS package, client + nodeChristophe Besson2026-09-044-3/+58
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | `npm run dist:win` produces MeshBay-Setup-<version>.exe: the Electron client and, beside it under resources/node-runtime/, the frozen meshbay-node daemon (meshbay-common inside it). No hub. Per-user, no elevation — matches the W3 constraint that a logon-triggered scheduled task needs admin. electron-builder / package.json build.win nsis, build/icon.ico, extraResources -> node-runtime/ build.nsis oneClick:false perMachine:false allowElevation:false allowToChangeInstallationDirectory:true dist:win -> packaging/win/build-win.ps1 (mirrors dist -> build-client.sh) packaging/win/ meshbay-node.spec + node-entry.py PyInstaller freeze of meshbay_node.daemon:main. The awkward deps (aiortc, av, aioquic, pydantic_core, uvicorn, watchdog, guessit, blake3, tzdata) are pulled in whole with collect_all — that list is expected to grow when a frozen run raises ModuleNotFoundError. build-node-runtime.ps1 throwaway venv -> pip install -> PyInstaller -> packages/meshbay-client/node-runtime/ (gitignored) build-win.ps1 Node>=22 check, npm ci, Electron bump, sync-ui, node runtime, electron-builder --win nsis bump-electron.mjs the Chromium-CVE "build against latest Electron" policy, out of the PS script (5.1 here-string terminator rules) README.md PyInstaller, not the python-embed zip: the frozen meshbay-node.exe is a genuine relocatable single binary, which is what src/main.js:findNodeBinary spawns (process.resourcesPath/node-runtime/meshbay-node.exe when packaged) and what the W3 autostart launcher points at. The embeddable zip needs pip to make that wrapper and the wrapper bakes in an absolute interpreter path. build/installer.nsh: on uninstall, taskkill meshbay-node.exe and delete the W3 Startup .vbs (it would point wscript at a deleted binary every sign-in). %LOCALAPPDATA%\meshbay\ — node.toml, keystore.enc — is never touched. ffmpeg is not bundled by default (node finds it on PATH); build-win.ps1 -FfmpegDir copies ffmpeg.exe/ffprobe.exe in for a self-contained installer. Verified on the Windows guest: PyInstaller freeze builds first try (node-runtime 147 MB), frozen `meshbay-node status` talks to the live daemon's loopback API; electron-builder --win nsis produces MeshBay-Setup-0.1.0.exe (155 MB), oneClick/perMachine flags applied, node-runtime bundled at the path findNodeBinary expects. test_packaging_win.py (14) pins the config invariants and the NSIS <-> platform.py autostart seam. Node suite 798 pass / 34 skip. Open: Authenticode signing (13.9 — unsigned => SmartScreen), Windows CI (18.3), electron-updater. First clean-machine install + DPAPI + autostart round-trip is a manual check. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: Windows daemon lifecycle (W3) — Startup-folder autostartChristophe Besson2026-09-042-3/+113
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The Linux node runs under `systemctl --user`. Windows has no per-user equivalent that works without elevation: `schtasks /create /sc ONLOGON` (even `/rl LIMITED /it`) fails with "Access is denied" for a non-admin user, because a logon trigger touches machine-wide scheduler state. So autostart is a `.vbs` in the per-user Startup folder instead: CreateObject("WScript.Shell").Run Chr(34) & "<exe>" & Chr(34), 0, False wscript runs it at every sign-in, hidden (0) and non-blocking. No admin, no console window, no new dependency. Verified end to end: the launcher brings the daemon up with no window and it answers its loopback API. node/platform.py autostart_install/remove/status — write / delete / detect the launcher autostart_run/end — start now (DETACHED|NO_WINDOW) / taskkill _node_exe — PATH, then next to sys.executable, then argv[0] node/daemon.py new `autostart install|remove|start|stop|status` verb reload (win32) -> POST /api/reload on the loopback API restart-daemon (win32) -> autostart_end + autostart_run reset (win32) -> also removes the launcher client/main.js, preload.js node:autostart handler + winAutostart* helpers (kept in step with platform.py) node:service-status (win32) probes the daemon; stop/restart/start use taskkill + a detached, windowless spawn Tests: 8 autostart cases in test_platform.py (mocked sys.platform, APPDATA pointed at tmp); `autostart status` added to the CLI dispatch sweep. Full meshbay-node suite green on Windows (784 passed / 34 skipped). Still open: no CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT handler, so a bare taskkill / window close does not run _shutdown() (SetConsoleCtrlHandler, follow-up). Service mode (pywin32/NSSM) stays Phase 2. * fix(client): resolve STUN hostnames in the main processChristophe Besson2026-09-042-0/+34
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Chromium's P2P socket manager failed every STUN hostname with ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED in a restricted-resolver environment (a Windows KVM guest), even though its own general network stack, the OS resolver and Node's resolver all resolved the same names -- and mapping the names to IPs with --host-resolver-rules changed nothing, so it is not ordinary resolution. WebRTC was left with no server-reflexive candidate. The desktop client now resolves the STUN hostnames in the main process (`ice:resolve-stun`, Node's dns.resolve4) and hands `transport.js` the IP form; a name that will not resolve (the decommissioned Mozilla host) is dropped. In a browser there is no `meshbay` bridge and the hostnames are used unchanged -- a browser resolves them fine, so that path is untouched. Falls back to the hostname form if the bridge call throws. Also, scoped to win32: disable WebRtcHideLocalIpsWithMdns, so the client publishes its real local IP instead of a `.local` name the node's ICE stack cannot resolve across the KVM bridge. Changes nothing on Linux/macOS. Test-env workaround, revisit before release. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* refactor(node): platform abstraction for Windows portability (W1-W2-W5-W6-W7)Christophe Besson2026-09-031-10/+26
| | | | | | | | | Platform directories, signal handling, chmod guards, ffmpeg discovery, and platform-conditional CLI messages — all testable on Linux. See docs/WINDOWS-PORT.md §5 for the plan these implement. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* chore(client): build against the latest Electron, and stop defining the ↵Christophe Besson2026-09-032-26/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | package twice Chromium CVEs are fixed in Electron releases, and a client built against an old one ships those holes to every user. That is a certain harm; a build that breaks on a new Electron is a repairable one. build-client.sh now bumps to the latest on every build, prints the comparison, and lets the build fail if it cannot cope — the failure is the signal to fix, not a reason to stay behind. It writes package.json and the lockfile on purpose: the new pin is meant to be committed. A registry it cannot reach is a warning, not a failure. Exercised by pinning back to 42.9.2 and building: "==> Electron 42.9.2 -> 44.1.1", exit 0, electron=44.1.1 in the packaged output. Note npm audit would have said nothing about any of this — Chromium CVEs fixed in Electron do not reliably reach the npm advisory database. Separately, package.json declared linux.target [deb, rpm] with its own deb/rpm depends, so `npm run dist` built a second package under the same name. The two had drifted: /opt/MeshBay/meshbay-client against /opt/meshbay-client/meshbay, and Depends: python3-meshbay-common naming none of the Electron runtime libraries the real DEBIAN/control lists — it would have installed cleanly and then refused to start. Nothing in the tree referenced `npm run dist`, which is why the drift was free to happen. That config is gone, "dist" delegates to build-client.sh, and test_desktop_shell.py refuses its return. `--dir` was re-run with no linux block at all: exit 0, same binary build-client.sh consumes. It needs appId, productName and files, nothing else. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AbwJDbNTkiRUh7HTWEoyss
* chore(client): declare author and homepage in the client package.jsonChristophe Besson2026-09-031-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | electron-builder warned `author is missed in the package.json` on every build, including the `--dir` one build-client.sh runs, and refused the deb/rpm targets outright over it and over a missing homepage. Both were pre-existing — builder 25 emitted the identical warning — and had simply never been hit, because those targets had never been built. The values are copied verbatim from packaging/deb/meshbay-client/DEBIAN/ control, which already declared them, so the two cannot disagree. Not added: `desktopName`, despite the warning that asks for it. The path this project actually ships (build-client.sh + packaging/desktop/ meshbay.desktop) already sets StartupWMClass=MeshBay, and src/main.js sets --class to match for dev runs. The warning concerns the .desktop electron-builder generates for its own deb/rpm targets, which is not what gets installed. That is the larger thing found here and left open: `npm run dist` defines a second, incompatible layout for a package of the same name — /opt/MeshBay/meshbay-client against /opt/meshbay-client/meshbay. See ~/next/npm-audit.md §9. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AbwJDbNTkiRUh7HTWEoyss
* chore(client): clear 12 npm advisories — electron-builder 26, electron 42.11.1Christophe Besson2026-09-032-1946/+1022
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | npm audit reported 12 findings (11 high, 1 critical), every one transitive and every one reached through electron-builder. The critical was tar (<=7.5.20), a family of path-traversal and symlink-poisoning advisories. electron-builder is a devDependency and build.files is src/** and ui/**, so none of it ships: the exposure was to whoever builds a release, not to users. Real, since a build machine producing signed artefacts is worth attacking, but it should not have been read as "the client has a critical vulnerability". electron-builder ^26.15.3 takes the audit to 0 on its own. It is a major, so it was measured rather than assumed: a --dir Linux build passed before and after, and the config used here (appId, files, linux.target, deb/rpm.depends) is nowhere near where 26's breaking changes are. The produced app.asar is not byte-identical to 25's, which matters only for 18.7's hash-and-compare story and is a release note, not a defect. electron ^42.11.1 is a patch bump inside the range already declared, where Electron ships its security backports. The built binary was launched under xvfb: two processes alive after 25s, empty log. That is the part that counts — test_desktop_shell.py pins the security contract by reading source, so it would stay green through any runtime regression. protobufjs's override floor goes ^7.5.5 -> ^7.6.5. The override itself is load-bearing and must stay: removing it drops castv2-client's protobufjs to 6.11.6, which carries a critical RCE advisory — and unlike everything above, protobufjs ships inside the application. But ^7.5.5 permitted 7.5.5, which is inside a high advisory's range (<=7.6.4); npm happened to resolve 7.6.6, so the protection was incidental rather than structural. Electron 44 is deliberately not taken here: two majors and a different Chromium, and nothing in the suite would notice a regression. It needs its own launch session. * feat(node): [node] quic_enabled flag, off by defaultChristophe Besson2026-09-011-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The QUIC MNP listener was started unconditionally whenever aioquic was importable — but nothing speaks QUIC: the browser and desktop clients use WebRTC, QuicChunkClient has no production caller, and the hub-less `group://` sidecar (D9) is unbuilt. So on every node it was an open UDP port with no client and no working NAT traversal (`punch_nat()` is a direct-connection helper, not a traversal stack). daemon startup now gates QuicChunkServer on `self._config.node.quic_enabled` (default False; `MESHBAY_QUIC_ENABLED` overrides). The generated node.toml templates (config.py, the CLI, the desktop client) carry the line, commented for what it is. Removes the exposure the third review's M2 lives on until a QUIC client exists; the parity fix for the handlers themselves is the next commit. Third security review, finding M2 (mitigation). * fix(client): allow reCAPTCHA in the Electron CSPChristophe Besson2026-09-011-2/+16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Needed for the paired meshbay-hub commit that makes the registration captcha unconditional (M1): the desktop client renders the same RegisterPage widget the browser does, which needs its script, its challenge iframe and its assets to load. script-src, the new frame-src, and img-src now allow exactly https://www.google.com and https://www.gstatic.com, and nothing else external — the hub's own origin is still absent from script-src, so T3 (nothing the hub returns is executed) is unaffected. This is a one-time source change: it ships identical in every build via `files: ["src/**"]` in electron-builder's config, with no build step, packaging step, or installer action for anyone to perform, and no setting for an end user to touch. test_desktop_shell.py updated to pin the exception precisely: the reCAPTCHA hosts are the *only* external origins allowed anywhere in the policy, and a bare `https:` scheme is still refused in script-src. Third security review, finding M1 (Option A, desktop half). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011pG75yGK3NthNfyjH74omG
* chore(node): round desktop icon corners for Android-style appearanceChristophe Besson2026-09-012-0/+0
| | | | | | Keep the original square version as icon-square.png. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(packaging): 4-package .deb/.rpm build system under /optChristophe Besson2026-08-312-28/+16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Shared venv architecture: meshbay-common owns the Python venv with all pip deps pre-installed; hub and node add only their code into it. Client is a standalone Electron app. No pip runs at install time. - Add build scripts (packaging/build/) for common, hub, node, client - Add orchestrator build-packages.sh with deb/rpm auto-detection - Add .deb control/postinst for all 4 packages - Add .rpm specs for all 4 packages (replaces python3-meshbay-common) - Add Gnome .desktop launcher and icon resizing - Add firewalld services (meshbay-cast, meshbay-node) and UFW profiles - Update systemd units to use /opt/meshbay-common/venv/bin/ paths - TMDB token baked into node package at build time via QE/node.env - Fix package-lock.json sync for protobufjs override Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: node workflow redesign — wizard auto-config, reset, MusicBrainz contactChristophe Besson2026-08-291-53/+73
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Wizard (Electron): - Auto-provisions node config (hub URL + username) from logged-in user - node:start handles both cold start and restart of misconfigured daemon - Waits for daemon to reach 'running', auto-links node key on hub - probeNode accepts intermediate states for wizard progress feedback Reset (meshbay-node reset): - Unlinks node key from hub (DELETE /me/node_key, best-effort) - Stops and disables daemon (systemctl --user disable --now) - Erases ~/.config/meshbay, ~/.local/share/meshbay, ~/.local/state/meshbay MusicBrainz contact: - Resolved from owner's hub email instead of per-node roster config - Removed musicbrainz_contact UI and WebRTC handshake field - Removed set_musicbrainz_contact/musicbrainz_contact from roster Node pairing: - Added operator pairing banner on NodePage - Added operator_paired flag to list_groups Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(client): add app icon based on the MeshBay logoChristophe Besson2026-08-252-0/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Adds build/icon.png (1024x1024, cropped/upscaled from QE/meshbay-logo-v2.jpg) at electron-builder's default buildResources path, so packaged .deb/.rpm builds get a real icon instead of Electron's stock one. The generic `build/` gitignore rule (Python artifacts) was swallowing this legitimate source directory, so it gets an explicit exception. BrowserWindow now points at the same file for its own icon, and the process runs with --class=MeshBay so a dev run's WM_CLASS matches the StartupWMClass electron-builder derives from productName for the packaged app — kept consistent, even though the launcher/dash icon match itself only resolves once a .desktop file exists (i.e. after packaging, not in dev).
* feat: add Photos group appChristophe Besson2026-08-251-0/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A new group application (docs/apps.md's plug-in mechanism), following the plan in docs/photos.md. Unlike Videos/Music: several photo roots per group instead of one (photo_roots is a set, one signed op replaces it whole), a single album-grid view with no third-party matching step, and per-photo info read from the file's own EXIF at index time — no metadata service, no credential, no outbound network call at all. Protocol (meshbay-common, MNP 0.10 -> 0.11, additive): `taken_at`/`camera` on IndexEntry; `photo_roots`/`photo_roots_ack`; `OP_PHOTO_ROOTS`. Node: roster.py stores photo_roots as a group_settings entry (JSON list, same shape as enabled_apps); ops.py/webrtc_server.py validate and sign the whole set in one op, same pattern as apps_enabled; a new PhotoEnricher (indexer/enrich_photo.py) runs Pillow in its own small bounded pool, separate from the video/audio pools, producing a resized thumbnail plus the two EXIF fields — never GPS, checked by a grep-based regression test. Client: photos-app.js — one album card per directory containing images, a per-album photo grid, and a lightbox with next/previous (keyboard and buttons), zoom in/out/fit/100% starting from the actual on-screen fit percentage, and a "zip this album" button reusing files-app.js's own zip mechanism (lifted into file-utils.js's downloadDirectory so both call the same implementation). group-settings.js gets an add/remove multi-root picker, distinct from Videos/Music's single-value one. Bugs found and fixed before this ever shipped, worth keeping the story of: - enrich_photo.py read width/height from the raw image *before* applying EXIF orientation correction, and read DateTimeOriginal off the plain 0th-IFD Exif object — a real camera stores it in the Exif sub-IFD, which Pillow only exposes via get_ifd(Exif). A flat, hand-built EXIF dict round-trips through Pillow either way, which is exactly what would have hidden both bugs; the regression test builds EXIF with piexif instead, matching what real hardware produces. - photos-app.js's album grouping stripped a trailing path segment from entry.path under the assumption it still carried a filename — it doesn't (files-app.js's own convention: e.path is already the containing directory), so every album collapsed one level into its parent. Found live against a real multi-folder library. - transport.js's ADMIN_OP_TYPES allowlist (already the fix for an identical bug on video_root/apps_enabled, see 4783d81) was missing photo_roots: its admin_challenge matched no pending request and was silently dropped, so saving a photo root just timed out after 30s with no error. - daemon.py pruned a thumbnail when its file left the index (root removed or reconfigured) but never forgot the content hash was "already attempted" — the same bytes reappearing under a renamed/relocated root (an operator's real workflow) were then permanently skipped, forever, with nothing to indicate why. Discarding the attempt alongside the cache entry on prune is what makes pruning actually reversible. - packages/meshbay-client's app:// protocol handler served every file with no Cache-Control header, so Chromium was free to serve a stale cached copy indefinitely — none of several `npm run sync-ui` + reload cycles during development actually picked up the new code until the renderer's disk cache was cleared by hand. Now sends Cache-Control: no-store. - the lightbox's zoomed image used flex centering (align-items/ justify-content: center) combined with overflow: auto — a well-known trap where the browser centers overflowing content by shifting it, and the leading half of that overflow (here, the top of a zoomed photo) sits outside what the scrollport can actually reach. Reported live as "unusable". Fixed by switching to top/left alignment once zoomed. * feat(node): systemd service panel on the Node page, and a clean CLI restartChristophe Besson2026-08-222-0/+64
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a status panel at the top of the Node page — always visible, even before an MNP connection exists — showing the meshbay-node systemd unit's own state (via `systemctl --user show`, main process only) with Start/Stop/Restart controls. This is the piece the rest of the page cannot provide: it has to work while the daemon is stopped or crash- looping, which the MNP-based sections require the daemon to already answer. While touching node lifecycle: `reload` and `restart-daemon` in the CLI shelled out to pgrep + SIGTERM/SIGHUP and respawned the process by hand, logging to a hardcoded /tmp path. That pattern already SIGHUPed a developer's own running node by accident once (see the old test_cli_dispatch.py comment). Both now delegate to `systemctl --user reload|restart meshbay-node`, which the unit already supports correctly (ExecReload=, Restart=on-failure). * fix: first-run wizard reliability and node startup performanceChristophe Besson2026-08-221-2/+38
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Node daemon no longer blocks startup on slow directory scans — initial indexing runs in the background so the node reaches "running" immediately after transports are up. Fixes the wizard failing to detect the node when large USB/NAS roots take minutes to scan. Also: wizard key-linking deadlock resolved (main.js links during poll), invite form stays in DOM during reconnects (disabled instead of destroyed), pairing code bridges to renderer, and firewall docs for LAN casting added. * fix: find meshbay-node in ~/.local/bin when not in PATHChristophe Besson2026-08-221-8/+17
| | | | | | | | Electron does not run in a login shell, so ~/.local/bin is not in PATH and `which meshbay-node` fails. Check that well-known location first in both node:installed and the node:start fallback. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: node:start auto-provisions config and unlock keyChristophe Besson2026-08-222-2/+35
| | | | | | | | | | | | When the wizard calls node:start with {hubUrl, username}, the handler writes a minimal node.toml and a random unlock.key if they don't exist. The daemon then creates the keystore on first start using the unlock file — fully non-interactive. Existing configs are left untouched: if node.toml or unlock.key already exist, provisioning is skipped and the node starts as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* docs: add npm 11 Electron setup steps to meshbay-client READMEChristophe Besson2026-08-221-0/+9
| | | | | | | npm >= 11 blocks install scripts by default. Document the approve-scripts + manual install + chrome-sandbox SUID steps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix: move meshbay-client build scripts out of gitignored build/ dirChristophe Besson2026-08-223-1/+74
| | | | | | | | The root .gitignore ignores build/ (Python convention), which silently prevented sync-ui.js and its companion index.html from being committed. Rename to scripts/ so the files are tracked normally. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: D.6 first-run wizard — detect, start, link, group, gek-init, pairChristophe Besson2026-08-213-4/+380
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Desktop client guides new users through the full onboarding sequence without a terminal: detect local node → start daemon (systemd with direct-start fallback for dev) → link node key to hub → create group → attach directories → gek-init → operator pair. - node:detect returns configured field to distinguish missing vs stopped - node:start tries systemctl first, checks is-active, falls back to spawning the binary directly when the unit crashes (dev mode) - probeNode() extracts the shared config→token→fetch pattern - SetupWelcome on empty HomePage links to /create-group - CreateGroupWizard step 0 handles node detection and start - platform.js exposes node.installed() and node.start() - 12 setup.* i18n keys added to all 10 locales - Integration test for node:start fallback logic Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: LAN Wi-Fi casting to Chromecast via local HTTP relayChristophe Besson2026-08-216-6/+720
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Re-serve decrypted fMP4 video over HTTP on the LAN so a Chromecast can play the stream. The relay runs in the Electron main process — same trust boundary as downloads and MSE playback. - cast-relay.js: HTTP server with BoxAccumulator (reassembles WebRTC chunks into moof+mdat pairs), ring buffer, backpressure, finish() for clean end-of-stream, fixed port range 19550-19553 - cast-chromecast.js: mDNS discovery (bonjour-service) + CASTV2 protocol (castv2-client), connect/reload/disconnect lifecycle - Seek-aware: relay restarts on every seek, Chromecast reloads new URL; generation counter prevents stale async errors from killing active restarts; landingPlayheadRef suppresses programmatic seeking events - Device picker in video top bar with scan, device selection, copy-URL fallback, and cast status indicator - IPC bridge (main/preload/platform) for start/push/stop/finish/status/ discover/chromecastConnect/chromecastReload/chromecastDisconnect - Phase 3 design doc for DLNA/Smart TV in docs/cast-smart-tv.md Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat: unified group management, public groups, and activity-based sidebarChristophe Besson2026-08-202-0/+105
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create Group wizard (Electron-only) consolidates 6 steps across 4 interfaces into a single multi-step page: group creation on hub, node attachment, root selection via folder picker, GEK initialization, and auto-pairing — all in one flow. Browser SPA keeps its current behavior unchanged. Public group support (Option A — GEK for all groups): - All groups have GEK regardless of visibility; open-join groups auto-admit via TOFU when join_policy is "open" - Key rotation blocked for public groups (API guard + UI hidden) - Hub signaling allows WebRTC offers for nodes hosting open-join groups even when the caller isn't a member yet - attach_group writes join_policy to node.toml - Daemon loads GEK for all groups, not just private ones - Known-device path in join_request now auto-admits to open-join groups Node loopback API bridge (Electron IPC): - node:detect, node:call, node:pairing-code IPC handlers in main process - Renderer never sees tokens, paths, or keys (session token = physical access) - platform.js node namespace for UI consumption - Loopback endpoints: roots CRUD, member-upload toggle, reload Bug fixes: - Root change detection: removed premature ctx["roots"] updates from add_root and remove_root that prevented indexer retarget on reload - Duplicate offline message: global fallback now gated on !group - Signaling membership check: fallback to open-join groups for non-members Sidebar groups sorted by last_activity_at (most recent first): - New Group.last_activity_at column with Alembic migration - POST /v1/groups/{id}/activity endpoint, called on connect and chat send - Client-side sort + throttled hub updates (1/min) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
