Stage 4 of ~/next/improve-downloads.md, the flag day. Leases become compulsory
and a 2.x peer is refused at the handshake.
**The bound on leaseless reads (§3.4.1) did not exist, and it is what makes the
rest mean anything.** Browsing a group is never subject to a transfer slot —
that is an operator decision and a requirement: a member must be able to browse
a group at capacity exactly as they browse an idle one. But "not leased" cannot
mean "unbounded", or a client that simply omits `tr` transfers outside every cap
and the caps are decoration. A session may now read two distinct files at once
without a lease: one because a viewer looks at one file, two so that prefetching
the next photo stays possible. A count of files and not a byte budget, because a
RAW photo is 60-80 MB and is browsing while a 40 MB archive is a download, and
no size threshold separates them. Thumbnails, posters and cover art never reach
this check at all — they resolve out of the node's own cache.
It is a fairness control among cooperating clients, in the company of
`max_concurrent_streams`, and is not a defence against a member determined to
saturate a node's disk. That member is a member, and the answer to them is
`member revoke`.
**MNP_VERSION and MNP_MIN_SUPPORTED both move to 3.0**, on both sides. The
messages are additive; the requirement is not. An opt-in switch would leave a
leaseless branch reachable on every node, which is finding C6's lesson — a
transport that accepted a bare JWT — one feature later.
**The desktop client now checks before it connects.** The SPA is served by the
hub and picks up a new client on reload; the application ships its own
interface, so an un-updated one would sign in, list groups, and fail every
connection with `version_too_old` — a refusal in a protocol vocabulary with
nothing anyone can act on. It asks `/v1/hub/version` for `client.minimum` and
says so plainly instead. An unreachable hub is deliberately *not* "too old": a
captive portal or a closed laptop must not make starting the application
impossible.
**Every package is aligned on 0.13.0.** `meshbay-client/package.json` had
drifted to 1.0.0 while the Python packages were on 0.12.0 — invisible until
something compared those numbers, and then load-bearing: an installed client
announcing 1.0.0 sorts above a 0.13.0 minimum and walks through the gate meant
to stop it. That is stated in the code rather than left to be rediscovered; it
is acceptable exactly once, because the operator is updating every client, node
and hub by hand for this flag day. A new test fails if two packages ever
disagree again, and another fails if the hub would refuse the client the tree
builds.
Node suite 1209 passed, hub suite 861 passed.

A hung test could wedge the whole run: aiortc's ICE stack never completes
a loopback DataChannel handshake on Windows' default ProactorEventLoop, and
nothing capped it. Two changes, both no-ops off Windows:
- `timeout = 60` in the root pytest config (+ pytest-timeout in the dev
extras) so a stall fails the test instead of the suite.
- a root conftest that selects WindowsSelectorEventLoopPolicy on win32 only,
which is what aiortc needs there. Trade-off, documented: the selector loop
cannot spawn subprocesses on Windows, so the ffmpeg streaming tests fail
there rather than pass -- they need a per-module override or skipif(win32).

All three packages (common, hub, node) bump 0.9.0 -> 0.10.0 together.
Highlights since v0.9.0: email verification for registration, email
change and invitations; passphrase change and account recovery;
reCAPTCHA v2 on Register and Password Reset; node JSON-only control API
with the Node page absorbing the admin dashboard; WebRTC STUN fallback
fix; assorted hub UI fixes.

Bump the three packages to 0.8.0 (released together) and realign
meshbay-common's __version__, which had drifted to 0.7.0 while the
pyproject stayed at 0.6.0. Dependency pins updated to meshbay-common>=0.8.0.
Protocol versions are independent and unchanged: MNP 0.12, MHP 0.1. The
Electron client stays on its own 0.1.0 track (hub MIN_CLIENT_VERSION).
Since 0.6/0.7: public-groups admin switch with full server-side enforcement
and a group Revoke action; chat link previews (node-side URL unfurl, SSRF-
gated); chat composer focus + scroll-to-bottom on tab entry; whole-group
"Filter files" search.

The group UI's applications split, and the two missing-import bugs it
surfaced and fixed along the way.
MNP goes to 0.4: apps_enabled/apps_enabled_ack, and enabled_apps on the
handshake ack, for the group-applications registry. Additive — a node that
predates it is never sent the op, and a client that predates it never looks
for the field.

Two rounds of features and one long hunt.
The hub gained leaving a group, a cap of ten live public groups per owner, and
the rule that a group is listed only once a node has announced it — with
`prune-groups` to collect the ones that never got one. Presence rides on the
group list, from the registry the hub already keeps for signaling. The web
client speaks ten languages, splits Profile from Settings, and reads chat the
way it is written: newest first, paging backwards.
The rest was one symptom — "close the viewer, the next video hangs" — with three
independent causes underneath, none of which the test suite or e2e.py could see.
A background task the loop only weakly referenced, collected while it held a
transcode slot. A connection-state handler that forgot a peer without stopping
it. And `await proc.wait()` deadlocking on ffmpeg's own unread output, which no
amount of SIGKILL resolves. Found by instrumenting the node and reading the log,
after two confident fixes that addressed real but different bugs.
MNP goes to 0.2: PING/PONG and backward chat paging, both additive.

The web client speaks ten languages instead of one: French, Spanish,
Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian, Dutch
and Polish, all formal, with `hub`, `node` and `GEK` deliberately left in
English so the interface still matches the CLI and the docs. Catalogues
are fetched per language rather than shipped together, plural forms go
through Intl.PluralRules because Polish needs four of them, and locale
matching keeps the region so pt-BR and zh-CN resolve to the files written
for them.
Splitting one module into a loader and ten catalogues gave the SPA a
version dependency it did not have before, and the hub was serving static
assets with no explicit freshness at all. A browser that cached half a
deploy either rendered every string as its own key or, in the other
direction, failed to link the module graph and showed nothing. Static
responses now carry no-cache, which costs one conditional request and
answers 304 with no body.
The node and common packages carry no functional change; they move with
the version because the three are released together.

Twenty-one commits since 0.2, and enough of them change what the thing
does that moving the old tag would have been the wrong description.
Node: video streaming paced by the client rather than pushed at it, and a
stream that ends when the viewer closes instead of holding a transcode
slot for two minutes. An operator can remove an empty directory and
revoke a member over MNP. `meshbay-node group add` attaches another hub
group without hand-editing node.toml. The node.toml operator key is gone;
the roster is the only source of authority.
Hub and web client: transfers outlive the page that started them, with a
widget that shows the rate and can cancel them; downloads stream to disk
in every browser, through the File System Access API where it exists and
a service worker where it does not; a folder can be taken as a zip built
in the browser. A group owner can remove a member and edit the
description. Nodes are recorded at the address their signed announcement
arrived from, not the one STUN told them about. Deleted accounts stop
being counted while the connection log keeps their name.

All three packages together, as the conventions require, plus the RPM and DEB
metadata and their changelogs.
The tag said 0.2 while every package announced 0.1.0, which would have shipped an
RPM claiming to be the reviewed build while containing a different protocol: the
hub schema lost the user identity keys, tokens lost pk_user, and
gek_bundle_store left the wire. Pre-1.0, a breaking change bumps MINOR.

3-package layout: meshbay-common (shared crypto/protocol),
meshbay-hub (FastAPI server), meshbay-node (local daemon).
Includes validated POC spikes 1-6 in poc/, architecture drafts
v1/v2 in docs/, and CLAUDE.md project conventions.
All cryptographic primitives extracted from POC into
meshbay_common/crypto.py (GEK wrap/unwrap, chunk key derivation,
keystore encryption, chunk signing).
