The first icon was an arrow dropping into a receptacle, which is the download
glyph -- a vertical stem above a container reads that way whatever the context.
Replaced with a window folding a chevron into itself: no stem, and the frame
says which object is being minimised. Applied to both the nav button and the
panel indicator, which carried the same wrong shape.
The menu now offers Start or Stop for the node daemon, chosen from its actual
state and shown only when there is a daemon to act on: `supported && installed`,
so a machine with no node installed gets no entry rather than a control that
fails when used. `restart` is the start verb -- systemd's restart starts a
stopped unit, and there is no separate one to call.
The three service handlers become named functions so the tray drives exactly
what the Node page drives, instead of a second copy of the systemctl and Task
Scheduler branches. A read of the state that throws is treated as no control
at all.
The menu is rebuilt on a 5s timer while an indicator exists, and again straight
after an action. libappindicator has no "menu is about to open" event, so a menu
built once would show a stale Start/Stop for the life of the process; `systemctl
--user show` costs a few milliseconds.
Locales: tray.start_node / tray.stop_node in all ten.

A dedicated monochrome button in the nav, immediately left of the notification
bell, hides the window to a tray indicator. Linux only for now; Windows is
being done on that OS, and the capability is declared per platform so the
button never appears where the desktop shows no indicator -- there it would
hide the window for good.
Hides, never closes: `window-all-closed` quits the app, so closing here would
make "minimise" mean "exit" and drop the session, the transfers and the node
connection. `second-instance` now calls the same restore path, since focusing
a hidden window does nothing visible.
The context menu is not decoration. Under libappindicator -- how GNOME shows a
tray at all, via the AppIndicator extension -- `tray.on('click')` never fires;
the indicator only opens its menu. A tray whose sole affordance was a click
would be inert on the one desktop this targets. The click handler is kept for
desktops that do send it.
Menu labels come from the renderer with the IPC call: the locale files are the
interface's, the main process has no i18n, and a second string table is how two
of them start disagreeing. English fallbacks if none arrive.
The icon lives in src/, not build/: package.json `files` packages only `src/**`
and `ui/**`, so an icon under build/ is present in a dev run and missing from
every installed one. Monochrome, stroked, matching the nav glyph.
Verified on this host: Ubuntu GNOME with ubuntu-appindicators@ubuntu.com and
libayatana-appindicator3 present, so the indicator has somewhere to appear.
Not yet run end to end.

Windows-only changes, all found by actually running the previous session's
work rather than by review alone:
- CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT/LOGOFF/SHUTDOWN handler (platform.py, ctypes
SetConsoleCtrlHandler) so closing a console window, signing off, or a
system shutdown runs the daemon's real _shutdown() instead of Windows
just ending the process — closing WebRTC sessions and any in-flight
ffmpeg transcode instead of orphaning it. `taskkill /F` itself stays
uncatchable (like SIGKILL), so autostart_run() now spawns with
CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP instead of DETACHED_PROCESS and autostart_end()
tries CTRL_BREAK_EVENT against the recorded pid first, falling back to
the hard kill only if that doesn't stop it in time.
- Replaced the Node page's two independent autostart/service-mode toggles
with one "start automatically" select (off / at sign-in / as a
background service). The old pair let both be active at once — starting
the daemon twice, at boot and at sign-in — and their layout broke
wrapping inside .node-service's flex row. The new control always removes
whichever mechanism is active before installing the target; platform.py's
service_install() does the same on the CLI side. The "background
service" option disables itself (with a hint pointing at the CLI) when
running unpackaged, since service-mode.ps1/service.ps1/firewall.ps1 all
assume an installed build's layout — verified live rather than assumed
by actually running those scripts unelevated.
- findNodeBinary() no longer bakes a stray \r into resolved paths. Found by
rebooting after enabling per-user autostart: where.exe listed two
matches, and stdout.trim().split('\n')[0] only strips the whole string's
ends, leaving line one's own trailing \r attached — which landed inside
the Startup .vbs's quoted path and broke it with "Unterminated string
constant" at boot. Fixed by splitting on \r?\n and trimming every line.
- Dependency audit for the Windows installer (docs/WINDOWS-PORT.md): no
VC++ Redistributable needed, confirmed by inspecting the built
node-runtime's actual import table rather than assuming. New
docs/windows-build.md: a concise clone-to-installer build guide.

The installer's own mode question is effectively one-shot: customInstall
skips it entirely once the firewall rules already exist, for any reason --
and per-user mode sets those up on its own, with no Scheduled Task involved.
So declining once (or the rules existing from something unrelated, as
happened on a dev machine this session) was a dead end: no reinstall, repair,
or uninstall/reinstall cycle could ever bring the question back, since
uninstall defaults to leaving both alone.
Add the other door in (and out): a checkbox on the Node page, next to the
existing per-user autostart toggle, wired main.js -> preload.js -> platform.js
-> node-page.js. It runs packaging/win/service-mode.ps1 -- the exact script
installer.nsh already runs -- via one Start-Process -Verb RunAs elevation, so
the two paths can never disagree about what service mode means. The elevation
helper writes a tiny param()-based .ps1 to %TEMP% so the target script path
and its arguments bind through real PowerShell parameters instead of nested
string-quoting.
Also fixes a real pre-existing gap found while checking this: 8 of the 10
locale catalogues (all but en/fr) were missing the autostart/service-mode
keys added in an earlier commit this session (b782886) -- test_locales.py's
key-set-parity check uses a for-loop with an inline assert, so it stopped at
the first mismatch (fr) and never actually reached the other eight. Backfilled
all five keys (three pre-existing, two new) in de/es/it/ja/nl/pl/pt-BR/zh-CN.

The per-user Startup-folder launcher (W3) only ever runs after this user
signs in. A real Windows Service would start earlier, but under
LocalSystem/NetworkService -- accounts with no normal profile, so
%LOCALAPPDATA%\meshbay\ (config, keystore, data) would not exist for it.
Relocating storage to make that work is real surgery, deliberately not
done here.
Instead: a Scheduled Task, created once with admin rights, that runs AS
THIS USER at boot without needing them to sign in first.
`schtasks /create ... /ru <user> /rp ""` with no `/it` registers an S4U
(Service For User) logon -- no password stored anywhere, and unlike
LocalSystem it loads this account's own profile, so config_dir()/
data_dir() need zero changes. The cost: S4U carries no network credential,
which the node never needed -- everything it touches is local disk plus
outbound internet. Creating the task needs admin (a boot trigger touches
system-wide scheduler state, the same reason /sc onlogon needed it);
querying/starting/stopping an existing one does not -- Task Scheduler
grants the owning user that much itself, which is what lets the Node
page's Start/Stop/Restart drive it with no further UAC prompts.
meshbay_node/platform.py
service_install/_remove/_status/_run/_end -- mirrors autostart_* but
for the Scheduled Task; TASK_NAME moved here (was decorative before)
meshbay_node/daemon.py
new `service install|remove|start|stop|status` verb; restart-daemon and
reset now check for the service task too
packaging/win/service.ps1
the installer-side equivalent (extraResource); status/run/end never
self-elevate -- only install/remove do, exactly matching what
Task Scheduler itself requires
packaging/win/service-mode.ps1
ONE elevated helper running service.ps1 + firewall.ps1 together, so
choosing service mode costs exactly one UAC prompt, not two
build/installer.nsh
the install-time choice: "run as a background service?" (one
elevation, both jobs) vs the existing per-user + separate firewall
question. Checked first, unelevated, so re-running setup with
everything already configured asks nothing. Uninstall offers the
matching one-elevation cleanup, default No.
src/main.js
winServiceTaskStatus/Run/End, wired into node:installed,
node:service-status/-stop/-restart and node:start: when the Scheduled
Task exists, drive it; otherwise fall back to the existing per-user
spawn/kill path. This is the hard requirement -- Start/Stop/Restart
from the Node page must work in either mode.
node-page.js / locales
a hint explaining why the per-user autostart toggle is absent when
service mode is active (info.mode from the backend, no new field to
gate on -- it just isn't sent in that case)
package.json: 0.1.0 -> 1.0.0.
Verified: electron-builder compiles the new NSIS choice logic and ships
all three scripts; service.ps1's S4U install fails cleanly (Access
denied) when run unelevated, and its status/run/end never touch "runas".
Cannot verify the elevated success path myself (no admin in this
session) -- that needs a real UAC click. Node suite 843 pass / 25 skip;
test_packaging_win.py pins the one-elevation property, the S4U flags,
and that main.js actually checks the service task in all three handlers.

Root cause of both reports: node:service-status's `installed` field was
winAutostartInstalled() -- whether the Startup-folder launcher exists --
not whether the daemon can be managed at all. The Node page gates
Stop/Restart on `installed`, so with no autostart configured (the default
-- nothing installs it automatically) those buttons silently never
rendered, leaving only Start. A perfectly manageable daemon looked
unmanageable because a different, unrelated setting was off.
installed now reflects the actual daemon binary (findNodeBinary()), same
definition node:installed already used; autostart moves to its own field
carrying what installed used to mean.
That field also fixes the other half: there was no way to turn autostart
on except the CLI. NodeServicePanel now shows a toggle-switch next to
Start/Stop/Restart, wired through a new platform.node.autostart
(install/remove) that mirrors the existing service.* pattern -- the
preload/main.js bridge (W3) was already there, just never called from the
interface. English and French strings; other locales fall back to English
per the project's own stated policy (test_locales.py's own docstring).
Verified: node --check on every edited file; hub/node suites green
(863 pass, 0 fail — pre-existing test_locales.py encoding failures on
this Windows checkout are unrelated, reproduced identically on the
clean tree).

Phases 5-8 of docs/refactoring-search.md, extending the Videos merge
outward. A library shared by two groups now lists each track once inside
an album and each photo once inside a photo album, and a card served by
several groups says "N sources" instead of naming one of them.
Units come from each application's own grouping, never a copy of its
keys. For Music that meant exporting foldKey: groupMusicEntries folds
case to group but keeps the first-seen spelling to display, and which
group is seen first is whichever index arrived first — so keying a unit
on the display strings would let the chosen source change between page
loads.
A group whose connection fails is marked down and stops being chosen, so
a unit fails over to another group that has the file. Eviction is not a
failure. Every source being down still yields an entry: a tile that
fails to load beats a film that vanished from the grid.
sourceLabel now takes the whole unit rather than one entry. A show's
poster entry is picked for its thumbnail, so a show in two groups whose
cover episode sits in only one of them would have claimed a single
source. SourceTag lives in group-name.js — source-merge.js must keep
importing nothing (its test executes it standalone), and a copy in each
of the three apps is three chances to disagree.
test_search_files_unmerged.py holds the one thing that must not change:
the Files explorer is not merged, because there each group is a folder
and merging would remove a file from one of them. It also asserts the
other three lists are merged, or deleting the merge outright would leave
it passing and saying nothing.
One plan item was dropped as wrong rather than built: the Music queue in
onPreview needed no change. It filters by groupId and is reachable only
from FilesPanel, which is not merged.

Opening a different season of the same show moved everything under the
synopsis, which is where the season control and the episode list are, so the
thing just clicked was no longer under the pointer.
- The synopsis is exactly three lines for a multi-season show, with a "read
more" link floated into the third line box (-webkit-line-clamp only ever
puts its ellipsis at the end of the last line and leaves no room after it).
Clamped from above and pinned from below to the same number: a constant,
not a range — a season summary runs two lines and the next one twelve, and
a band still reads as a jump. Whether three lines is all of it depends on
the modal's width, so it is measured in the browser and re-measured on a
resize.
- The cast is clamped to two lines.
- SeasonMenu replaces SeasonTabs: the tab row scrolled sideways once a show
had more seasons than fit, which is close to unusable on a phone. One
trigger reading "Season 5 · 1997" and a menu of every season with its
episode count, one row high whatever the season count.
- media_meta_resp.director was filled from the credits crew's job ==
"Director", a movie shape. TMDB's aggregate tv_credits crew is routinely
empty and never carries that job, so every show answered null and the modal
dropped the line. It now comes from created_by on the show details. Cached
show metadata keeps its null until TMDB_META_TTL_SECS expires or an
operator re-matches.
The facts line is joined rather than concatenated (a title with no rating
used to open with " · ") and carries the show's own year next to the
director; the selected season's air year moved onto the picker.
test_video_detail_measured.py asserts rectangles through layout_probe.py, not
declarations: the picker's offset inside its own modal body is the same pixel
either way, the synopsis and cast heights, where the read-more link lands,
and the open menu at 320 px. Each measured block sits in a whole-pixel-height
container, or two identical layouts an eighth of a pixel apart round to tops
one pixel apart. test_tmdb_show_director.py covers the credit.

No-group home/explore message: when the hub offers no public groups,
drop the "browse public groups" invitation and just ask to be invited
by an admin. New home.invite_only key added to all ten catalogues.
Create-group wizard done step: reword the message to point at inviting
members, and send the button to the group's Settings tab (where the
invite form lives) instead of a stale /groups/<id> path that never
matched the router. The landing tab is a one-shot session hint, so the
usual per-user default-tab preference is left untouched.

Remove the node daemon's server-rendered admin UI (GET / and /audit, the
_render_* helpers and inline templates) and the `meshbay-node ui` CLI verb.
The loopback control API stays; it is now JSON only, ruff-clean, and 453
lines (was 1074). Also drop three never-wired endpoints (/api/config,
/api/chat/history, /ws/chat, plus broadcast_chat) and the pointless
18000/tcp firewall profiles.
The desktop client's Node page (static/node-page.js) takes over what the
dashboard showed, reorganised into six tabs (Overview, Groups, Roster,
Peers, Audit, Settings):
- Overview: version, node id, QUIC port, hub, index-cache maintenance
- Roster: node-wide view with unpin
- Peers and Audit: auto-load on open, no Load button
- Audit: real usernames and group names (resolved from the roster and
node.toml), Previous/Next pagination newest-first, Export CSV of every
matching row
- Settings: node settings, STUN, ICE, denylist, then Unlink from hub
Backend: audit.get_entries gains `offset`; /api/audit and /api/peers
resolve ids to names via a new _display_names helper; CSP tightened to
default-src 'none' now that no HTML is served. draft-v6 sections 2.11 and
2.12 corrected -- the Node page uses the loopback API, not MNP.
One capability is intentionally dropped: browser-based admin on a headless
server. The CLI covers every operation there.

The passphrase derives two independent client-side values: auth_key (the
hub verifier) and bundle_key (AES-GCM key for the per-node identity
bundles, which live on nodes and never on the hub). Changing or
recovering a passphrase is therefore two operations — swap the hub
verifier, and re-wrap every reachable node's identity bundle.
Flow A — change a known passphrase (Profile page)
- POST /v1/users/password re-proves the current passphrase, swaps
pw_hash/salt/version, revokes every refresh token and returns a fresh
pair so the tab that made the change stays signed in.
- MeshBayTransport.rewrapAllNodes: for every group's online node, connect
with the old key, read the identity off the handshake, store it back
under the new key. Returns updated / unreachable / failed so the UI can
point at the operator-unpin fallback for the gaps. Always-shown
confirmation dialog listing reachable and unreachable groups.
Recovery key
- keyderive.js generateRecoveryKey (32 random bytes, grouped Base32) and
deriveRecoveryKey (HKDF-SHA256, domain meshbay:recovery:v1:<username>).
- Every per-node identity gets a second copy wrapped under the recovery
key: keypair_bundles.bundle_enc_recovery (node-only column, added in
_SCHEMA_KEYPAIR and via a PRAGMA-guarded ALTER for existing DBs),
carried on keypair_bundle_store / _resp. MNP 0.13 -> 0.14, additive.
- session.recoveryKey is persisted in IndexedDB (slot rk) and lazy-loaded
on connect, so a group joined in any later session still leaves a
recovery copy.
- Shown once at registration; optionally folded into the verification
e-mail as a pass-through the hub never stores or logs, with an opt-out.
- Profile -> Recovery key re-loads R and backfills every reachable node
via rewrapAllNodes in bundleKey mode (no passphrase re-entry).
Flow B — recover a lost passphrase (#/reset, linked from sign-in)
- POST /v1/users/password/reset-request {username, email}: both must be
the pair on file, checked against the blind email_hash (never
decrypted). A mismatch — wrong e-mail, unknown username, non-active
account — takes the identical no-op path (no code, no mail, same 200),
so it reveals nothing and cannot be used to spray reset mail from a
username alone. 5/min, 1-hour single-use code.
- POST /v1/users/password/reset {username, code, new_auth_key}: same
expiry / attempts / single-use checks as e-mail verification; revokes
every session and deletes every registered device key so a stored one
cannot sign back in past the reset.
- ResetPasswordPage: request code -> code + optional recovery key + new
passphrase -> reset + sign-in -> fan-out. connect() falls back to the
recovery-wrapped copy when the passphrase key cannot open bundle_enc.
Without a recovery key: sign-in is restored and each group needs the
operator-unpin fallback.
Supporting fixes (found in live testing)
- member unpin now also deletes the keypair bundle; connect() mints a
fresh identity when handed a bundle it cannot open (unless _rewrapOnly,
set by rewrapAllNodes), so a rejoin completes instead of dead-ending
before the invite-code prompt.
- A browser with no bundle key gets a passphrase prompt on the group page
instead of a "go back to the browser you registered on" message.
- RegisterPage / LoginPage / ResetPasswordPage trim the username so every
key derivation matches the hub's stored form.
Docs: docs/auth-confirm.md. Locale keys across all ten catalogues.
Tests: test_password_change, test_password_reset, test_recovery_email,
test_recovery_key, test_rewrap_fanout, test_bundle_store_recovery, plus
additions to test_admin_ops_mnp and test_webrtc_transport. Hub suite 492
passed; node suite 741 passed (the lone test_packaging_units failure is a
pre-existing RPM-spec flake, reproducible on main).

Registration now creates a pending account and sends a 6-digit code via
email; the account activates only after verification. Email changes on
the profile page follow the same flow. Group invitations send a
notification email to the invitee (without revealing their address to

Backend: blind HMAC-SHA256 email index for uniqueness without decryption,

of expired codes and stale pending accounts, startup backfill of
email_hash for existing users.

V12 collapsed movies that TMDB resolved to the same tmdb_id into one
card. With the matcher still imperfect that fuses *different films*:
every numbered entry of a saga whose bare title resolves to the same
base id becomes one card, and two unrelated movies sharing a title do
too (seen live on a 9-film saga and a 2-film pair). A tmdb_id-keyed
merge only works once matching is reliable, which it is not yet.
Movies render one card per file again; VideoDetailModal loses the
`files` prop and the versions list, back to a single Play button;
`.video-version-list` and the `video.versions` key (×10 locales) are
removed. mergedShows (V6) is untouched — the operator's report was
about movies.
docs/mediacenter.md §10.1: V12 un-struck, marked reverted.

Expose invite_ttl_hours, pair_ttl_hours, device_request_ttl_minutes,
max_concurrent_streams and transcode_incompatible_video in the Node
management panel. Changes are applied immediately via roster.db and
written back to node.toml so they survive a DB wipe. On startup,
roster overrides take precedence over node.toml defaults.
Draft v6 §2.11 documents the design; MNP gains node_settings_set /
node_settings_set_ack for the browser path.

1. The "Search Files" <h2> is removed from the search page — it duplicated
the nav and cost a line of vertical space on mobile. `search.title` is
dropped from all ten locales (its only use).
2. A monochrome refresh button sits left of the Files breadcrumb home
icon. It calls `onRefreshIndex` (re-fetch the group index from the
node — the file list is a view over a cached copy with no other way to
pull a fresh one), spins while in flight, and only renders where an
`onRefreshIndex` is wired (the real group view, not the cross-group
search results). New `refresh` icon; `group.refresh_index` in all ten
locales.

A one-click alternative to the full "Fix match" search-and-pick flow, and
reachable without SSH (`meshbay-node video rematch` clears a whole group).
- MNP 0.13: tmdb_rematch / tmdb_rematch_ack (additive — an older node
logs "unknown type", the button just does nothing). OP_TMDB_REMATCH,
signed like tmdb_override (media_cache is shared node-wide).
- media_cache.drop_tmdb_match(file_id): forgets the match AND the
override marker — deliberately stronger than clear_file_tmdb, since the
operator is explicitly asking for a fresh resolution.
- webrtc_server: _do_tmdb_rematch / _admin_exec_tmdb_rematch, dispatch +
admin-response routing, broadcasts tmdb_rematch_ack.
- transport.js: rematchTmdbMatch(fileId, signFn); 'tmdb_rematch' in the
admin-op allowlist; tmdb_rematch_ack handled like tmdb_override_ack.
- video-app.js: a "Re-match" button beside "Fix match" in the detail
modal (isNodeAdmin), then bumpMediaMetaGeneration(). video.rematch_one
key in all ten locales.
docs/mediacenter.md §10.1: V8–V13 marked done.

Two movie files that TMDB resolves to the same id (the same film at two
resolutions, or the same rip in two folders) now collapse to one poster
card, mirroring the existing show merge — same keying discipline so an
unmerged movie keeps its card and a merge updates props rather than
remounting. The detail modal lists the versions (resolution · duration ·
size), each a Play button, when there is more than one; a single-file
movie is unchanged. New `video.versions` key in all ten locales.
Known edge, noted in §10.1: "Fix match" on a merged movie corrects only
the representative file; the other version un-merges and can be corrected
on its own.

A batch of wrong poster-grid matches found live on a real library
(2026-08-29): a two-volume film's second part matched the first; a
numbered sequel matched a same-year making-of documentary; several
entries of one franchise matched a single early entry whose localized
TMDB title is the franchise name; one matched nothing. One mechanism:
_tmdb_search returned the first candidate query whose title-similarity
ratio merely cleared 0.6, before alternative_title / the Roman-numeral
variant was ever tried.
Matching:
- title_parse: fold guessit's volume/part number back into display_title
so the parts of a multi-part film stay distinct in the query, the card
and the override.
- _tmdb_search: keep a strong PASS 1 fast path (ratio >= 0.85, one
request), otherwise score every candidate query and pick the best. A
year-exact rescue lifts a sub-0.6 top hit to the confidence floor only
when TMDB's own year-filtered result lands exactly on the filename's
year. No local re-ranking of any single result list; no tmdb.py change.
Fix match / rematch:
- _admin_exec_tmdb_override: a movie override touches its own file only
(guessit gives a whole franchise one display_title); a show override
still fans out. Corrected files are marked in media_cache.tmdb_override.
- media_cache: tmdb_override table; clear_file_tmdb / clear_tmdb_matches
drop auto-resolved matches while sparing manual corrections.
- ops.rematch_video + `meshbay-node video rematch` (loopback endpoint +
CLI verb): re-resolve a group's video matches after a matcher fix.
file_tmdb is keyed by content hash and otherwise only pruned on
deletion, so nothing dislodged a cached match before.
- a rename now drops the stale auto match too (daemon
_reenrich_renamed_video_entries).
UI:
- VideoDetailModal shows the source filename and resolved TMDB id; an
unmatched poster gets a badge (3 new video.* i18n keys x 10 locales).
So a wrong match can actually be identified before hitting Fix match.
docs/mediacenter.md 10.1 records this and the V8-V13 follow-up backlog
(show-branch ladder, year-aware _best_match, wider sequel_variants, the
0.6-0.85 extra calls, movie grid merge, per-card rematch).

Downloads from search: FilesPanel accepts a getTransport callback for
cross-group file downloads. Select/Download are available in search;
delete and zip are hidden (readOnly). Each download connects to the
entry's group via the pool on demand.
Photos view: PhotosApp reused in search with the same pattern as
Videos/Music — synthetic root, per-entry transport refs, group badges
on album cards. Lightbox uses per-entry transport for full-resolution
image fetches. Zip download hidden in search context.
Pre-connecting: connections to all groups start as soon as indexing
finishes, regardless of the active view. Thumbnails cache across pool
evictions, so they're ready when the user switches views.

Search page fetches indexes from all groups, then renders consolidated
entries through the existing FilesPanel, VideoApp, and MusicApp
components — no reimplemented views. Groups appear as top-level
directories in the file browser; video/music entries use a synthetic
root with per-entry transport refs for thumbnails and metadata across
groups. Music player lifted to app.js with getConnection(groupId) for
cross-group playback. Connection pool (max 3, LRU eviction) manages
lazy WebRTC connections. All 10 locales updated with search keys.

A new General tab in Administration carries one switch, allow_public_groups,
stored in a hub_settings key/value table (runtime-editable, unlike hub.toml).
Default is on; an absent row means on, so an upgrade changes nothing.
Enforcement is server-side on every hub-mediated path, not just the SPA:
- create_group refuses visibility=public (403), staff included
- list_public_groups the directory returns nothing (local + federated)
- join_group open-joining a public group is refused
- group_online_nodes a non-member of a public group is handed no node
- signaling.webrtc_offer drops the "node hosts an open group" fallback
- federation.export_directory advertises nothing to peer hubs
The switch is read live, so flipping it back restores every path. Existing
members of a group that predates the switch keep their membership row and
their access — this is plan A, not a purge. GET /v1/hub/info exposes the
flag (unauthenticated) so the create-group form and the sidebar's "Public
groups" link render correctly.
Also in the admin Groups tab: a Revoke action beside Suspend. Suspend is the
reversible hub flag; Revoke calls POST /v1/admin/revoke, which sets
status=revoked and broadcasts a signed revocation every node enforces
(denylist + dropped live sessions). It is confirm-guarded and names the group.
And a message fix the revoke work surfaced: group_online_nodes, join_group and
webrtc_offer answered "Group is suspended" for any non-active status. They now
report the real state, so a member of a revoked group is told "Group is
revoked" rather than something reversible-sounding.
Tests: test_public_groups_toggle.py (10) covers the switch end to end and the
five enforcement paths; test_revocation.py gains the status-message assertion.

Prefetch depth (music-player.js): 5 tracks ahead on Wi-Fi, 3 on cellular —
more runway through a screen-lock network gap when the connection is cheap
and fast, less when it's metered. navigator.connection is Chromium-only;
Firefox/Safari (where it's undefined) get the same conservative tier as an
unrecognized connection type, never assumed fast. MAX_CACHED_BLOBS raised
to 6 to hold the largest case (current + 5).
Keep-screen-on-during-audio (new user preference, off by default): a
Settings toggle, backed by a new whitelisted key on
/v1/users/me/preferences (music_keep_screen_on). music-player.js holds a
Screen Wake Lock only while a track is playing and only when the user has
opted in — unlike the video player's unconditional lock, this must not
fight the ordinary expectation (matching Spotify/Deezer) that the phone
locks on its own while listening.

A new group application (docs/apps.md's plug-in mechanism), following the
plan in docs/photos.md. Unlike Videos/Music: several photo roots per group
instead of one (photo_roots is a set, one signed op replaces it whole),
a single album-grid view with no third-party matching step, and per-photo
info read from the file's own EXIF at index time — no metadata service,
no credential, no outbound network call at all.
Protocol (meshbay-common, MNP 0.10 -> 0.11, additive): `taken_at`/`camera`
on IndexEntry; `photo_roots`/`photo_roots_ack`; `OP_PHOTO_ROOTS`.
Node: roster.py stores photo_roots as a group_settings entry (JSON list,
same shape as enabled_apps); ops.py/webrtc_server.py validate and sign the
whole set in one op, same pattern as apps_enabled; a new PhotoEnricher
(indexer/enrich_photo.py) runs Pillow in its own small bounded pool,
separate from the video/audio pools, producing a resized thumbnail plus
the two EXIF fields — never GPS, checked by a grep-based regression test.
Client: photos-app.js — one album card per directory containing images,
a per-album photo grid, and a lightbox with next/previous (keyboard and
buttons), zoom in/out/fit/100% starting from the actual on-screen fit
percentage, and a "zip this album" button reusing files-app.js's own zip
mechanism (lifted into file-utils.js's downloadDirectory so both call the
same implementation). group-settings.js gets an add/remove multi-root
picker, distinct from Videos/Music's single-value one.
Bugs found and fixed before this ever shipped, worth keeping the story of:
- enrich_photo.py read width/height from the raw image *before* applying
EXIF orientation correction, and read DateTimeOriginal off the plain
0th-IFD Exif object — a real camera stores it in the Exif sub-IFD, which
Pillow only exposes via get_ifd(Exif). A flat, hand-built EXIF dict
round-trips through Pillow either way, which is exactly what would have
hidden both bugs; the regression test builds EXIF with piexif instead,
matching what real hardware produces.
- photos-app.js's album grouping stripped a trailing path segment from
entry.path under the assumption it still carried a filename — it
doesn't (files-app.js's own convention: e.path is already the
containing directory), so every album collapsed one level into its
parent. Found live against a real multi-folder library.
- transport.js's ADMIN_OP_TYPES allowlist (already the fix for an
identical bug on video_root/apps_enabled, see 4783d81) was missing
photo_roots: its admin_challenge matched no pending request and was
silently dropped, so saving a photo root just timed out after 30s with
no error.
- daemon.py pruned a thumbnail when its file left the index (root removed
or reconfigured) but never forgot the content hash was "already
attempted" — the same bytes reappearing under a renamed/relocated root
(an operator's real workflow) were then permanently skipped, forever,
with nothing to indicate why. Discarding the attempt alongside the
cache entry on prune is what makes pruning actually reversible.
- packages/meshbay-client's app:// protocol handler served every file
with no Cache-Control header, so Chromium was free to serve a stale
cached copy indefinitely — none of several `npm run sync-ui` + reload
cycles during development actually picked up the new code until the
renderer's disk cache was cleared by hand. Now sends Cache-Control:
no-store.
- the lightbox's zoomed image used flex centering (align-items/
justify-content: center) combined with overflow: auto — a well-known
trap where the browser centers overflowing content by shifting it, and
the leading half of that overflow (here, the top of a zoomed photo)
sits outside what the scrollport can actually reach. Reported live as
"unusable". Fixed by switching to top/left alignment once zoomed.

Five related pieces of polish against the Music app and Settings, all
from the same conversation:
- Music app now requires audio_root, same as Videos requires video_root:
an empty-state message until one is set, and grouping filtered to only
what's under it (underAudioRoot, mirroring video-app.js's
underVideoRoot). Wires the new audio_root/audio_root_ack pair through
transport.js and group-page.js state the same way video_root already
flows.
- Starting one player now stops the other — opening a film closes the
music queue, starting a track closes the video modal. Both used to run
at once, found live.
- Group Settings reworked: every section but a bare form (invite,
pair-operator, approve-device) is now collapsible (CollapsibleSection);
the uploads on/off button is a real toggle switch (ToggleSwitch,
reused for TMDB/MusicBrainz's enabled switches too, each now with an
icon + status badge in its header instead of a plain checkbox row);
and shared directories, the Videos root picker, and the new Music root
picker are merged into one "Directories" section (RootFolderRow) instead
of three separate ones scattered down the page — the root pickers only
show once their app is actually enabled.

Tagging and covers for these two formats landed already, but neither one
decodes in any mainstream browser's <audio> element at all — a real
library scan turned up 273 such files that would show up correctly in the
Music app and then simply fail on click. This closes that gap: the node
transcodes to AAC/M4A on request (a one-shot whole-file conversion, not
live-piped like video's fMP4 segments — an audio file is small enough that
streaming it buys nothing), caches the result under its own content hash
the same way a TMDB poster or a MusicBrainz cover is cached, and serves it
back through the ordinary file_req/chunk path. That path used to assume
anything in the media cache was thumbnail-sized (single chunk, always);
generalized it to slice a cached blob the same way a real file on disk
gets sliced, since a transcoded track can be several MB.
New MNP pair (`audio_transcode_req`/`_resp`, version bump to 0.9), shares
its concurrency cap with video's transcode pool rather than getting its
own — both are real ffmpeg processes on the same node. Every other audio
format is untouched: this only fires for .wma/.mpc, the two extensions
that need it.

A genuinely corrupt source file (found via a real "1 track, fails to play"
report) would stop a "play all" queue dead with no way forward except
manually picking the next track. The player now counts consecutive load
failures and advances past them on its own, capped so a pathological queue
(everything broken) doesn't spin forever; the existing Promise-rejection
catch and a new <audio> onerror handler both feed the same counter, since a
decode failure can surface either way depending on the browser.

Album-grid readability, part two:
- groupMusicEntries (music-app.js): an album bucket left with exactly
one track - a real album tag, but only one song from it, not the
whole release - clutters the grid the same way an untagged loose
track does. Both kinds now fold into one "<artist> - Various" tile
per artist, unless there is only one leftover track overall, where
relabeling buys nothing and the track keeps its own name (or the
generic placeholder, if it never had one).
- foldKey also normalizes "&" vs "and" ("Artist & The Band" / "Artist
and The Band" is one act, tagged both ways across different rips of
the same catalogue) alongside the existing case/whitespace fold.
- music-player.js: a close button pauses and tears the player down;
an unmount cleanup effect (pause, revoke every cached blob URL)
fires either way, whether that's the close button or the shell
tearing the bar down on its own. A "current queue" button opens an
overlay listing the whole playing queue with the current track
highlighted, click any to jump to it - works identically regardless
of how the queue was built (an album, the consolidated misc bucket,
a single standalone track), since it only ever reads the player's
own live tracks/order/pos.
- group-page.js: this component is not remounted when switching to a
*different* group on the same /group/:id route (only the groupId
prop changes) - so without an explicit reset, music from one group
would carry into the next one opened. Resets musicQueue to null on
groupId change; a tab switch inside one group still leaves it alone.
- Scrubbed real artist/band names that had leaked into code comments
and test fixtures (enrich_audio.py's docstrings, several
test_enrich_audio.py assertions, a music-app.js comment) - replaced
with generic placeholders, no behavioural change.
- i18n: music.various, music.player_close, music.player_queue,
music.queue_title added across all ten locales.
Client-side only except none of this touches the node at all. npm run
sync-ui re-run. Full suite: 1129 passed, no regressions.

Implements the client half of docs/musicbay.md against MNP 0.8:
- music-app.js: album grid (grouped by artist -> album, from index-time
artist/album fields) or flat folder view, per-group localStorage
toggle like Videos. MusicBrainz (music_meta_req) is only looked up
when a track has no embedded cover at all — well-tagged files never
trigger a network call, unlike Videos where TMDB is unconditional.
Reuses video-app.js's MediaThumb/LazyTile (now exported) rather than
duplicating the chunk-path thumbnail decode + virtualization.
- music-player.js: the persistent player bar — queue, shuffle (Fisher-
Yates, keeps the current track in place when toggled), repeat (off/
all/one), volume (localStorage), prev/next, a one-track prefetch
cache. No MSE, no node-side streaming: a track is downloaded and
decrypted once via file-utils.js's pipelinedDownload, same chunk
pipeline Files already uses, then played from a blob URL.
- group-page.js: owns musicQueue/musicbrainzConfig state and renders
MusicPlayerBar outside the tab-switched area — deliberately, so
playback survives navigating to Chat/Files, the same reasoning the
video/preview modals are shell-owned rather than app-owned.
- apps.js: registers "music". transport.js: fetchMusicMeta (keyed by
path, same reordering-hazard fix as fetchMediaMeta),
setMusicbrainzConfig/setMusicbrainzEnabled (signed ops, mirroring
TMDB's), and the three new ack handlers. group-settings.js: a
MusicBrainz settings section (contact string, per-group toggle) —
the existing Applications checklist already picks up "music" for
free, per apps.md's own claim.
- icon.js: music/pause/skip-next/skip-prev/shuffle/repeat/volume,
drawn in the same stroked style as the existing set.
- i18n: group.tab_music, the music.* and settings_node.musicbrainz_*
keys, translated (not just copied) across all ten locales, Polish
carrying full one/few/many/other plural forms for music.n_tracks.
- webapp.py's _ASSETS, test_hook_ordering.py's STATIC_FILES and
test_transport_contracts.py's SPLIT_FILES gain the two new files.
Full suite (common + hub + node): 1116 passed, no regressions.
`npm run sync-ui` in meshbay-client confirmed both files copied.

wizard polish
Two operator-facing fixes for a real 3-season show whose automatic TMDB
match was wrong at the show level: per-season overview/air_date tabs in the
detail modal (falling back to the show-level text when a season's own is
empty), and a "Fix match…" search-and-correct affordance that re-resolves
every file sharing the corrected show's display_title. New signed op
OP_TMDB_OVERRIDE and two read-only pairs (season_meta_req/resp,
tmdb_search_req/resp), MNP_VERSION 0.5 -> 0.6.
Also: the create-group wizard gets a spinning indexing indicator and an
app-selection step, group settings default the TMDB language to the
operator's own locale (never as a global default), and a file renamed
mid-session now re-triggers title parsing instead of being silently
skipped by the enrichment dedup guard.
Fixes two bugs found during this work: the search overlay's z-index lost
to the base video-overlay class and rendered invisibly, and season_meta's
own empty overview didn't fall back to the show-level one.

Implements docs/mediacenter.md: a "Videos" group application built on the
existing files index rather than a separate catalogue. On the node side,
new indexer enrichment (technical probe, filename/season parsing, thumbnail
generation) runs per-file once an operator has chosen a video_root for the
group, plus a TMDB client for on-demand poster/metadata lookups (never
client-side, thumbnails delivered over the existing chunk path). On the hub
side, a new video-app.js renders a lazily-mounted poster grid or a
thumbnail-only flat list, with TMDB entirely optional per group.
Along the way: the global apps registry now drives Settings' default-tab
picker instead of a hardcoded list, and the video_root is configured from
group Settings (like uploads) rather than from Files, with the node
refusing to run any TMDB/thumbnail work until one is set.
Fixes several bugs found via live testing against a real library, notably
a race between two effects writing the same "image ready" state that could
leave a poster grid spinning forever on a same-tab revisit — see
mediacenter.md §5.4 for the full account of each one.

reconcile, and delta sync
Indexer performance work, in four parts:
- Persistent (path, size, mtime) -> hash cache (indexer/cache.py) so a node
restart no longer re-hashes every file — measured at 23 minutes for a
114 GB library on a slow disk before this, near-instant after. Hashing
is deliberately kept sequential (max_workers=1): it was never actually
concurrent despite the pool size, and two interleaved reads seek-thrash
a spinning disk instead of going faster.
- Byte-based scan progress (IndexProgress), surfaced via the loopback
index-status route, the handshake ack, and a periodic INDEX_PROGRESS
push to connected peers — drives a progress bar in the Create Group
wizard and "add a directory" in Settings, and an animated presence dot.
Guaranteed to settle back to idle via try/finally and a final push on
the scanning->false transition.
- The reconcile backstop's directory walks now run in the executor
instead of blocking the daemon's event loop; its interval defaults to
10 min (was 60s) with adaptive backoff to 2h when nothing changes,
reset on a real change or a peer connecting, and is now a per-group
operator setting (signed op + group Settings UI).
- INDEX_DELTA wired up (protocol support existed, nothing called it):
_on_index_change now sends additions/deletions instead of rebuilding
the full entries list, coalesced over a short window so a burst of
file events produces one push, and the hub swarm registration for
public groups only (re-)registers newly added hashes.
Also fixes several bugs found while testing the above against real
libraries (a 114 GB and a 100+ GB group on a USB HDD):
- /api/reload blocked until the reload — including a brand-new group's
full initial scan — finished, which the Electron bridge's fixed 30s
call timeout turned into a hard failure on any real library. The route
now fires the reload without waiting (ops.start_reload), matching
add_root/remove_root's existing pattern; the wizard's own step order
was fixed to wait for the group to actually appear hosted before the
steps that need it (extra roots, GEK), with retries for the residual
race between that and the daemon's own bookkeeping.
- transport.js's hand-rolled msgpack codec had no case for uint64/int64
(0xcf/0xd3) and crashed decoding any message containing one — hit by
IndexProgress.scanned_bytes/total_bytes for any group over ~4.3 GB.
Verified against real msgpack-encoded bytes from the Python side.
- chat_hist_resp, and this change's own index_progress and
set_scan_settings_ack pushes, were not routed by message type and
could be handed to an unrelated pending request by the transport's
"oldest pending" fallback, stalling it until its own 30s timeout and
corrupting whatever received the wrong reply in its place.

GroupPage's 6620-line app.js carried Chat and Files wedged in directly, with
no way to add another group-level app without touching the shell itself. It
is now app.js (routing, non-group pages) plus nine focused files — apps.js
(the registry), chat-app.js, files-app.js, video-player.js, group-page.js
(the shell), group-settings.js, hub-client.js, icon.js and file-utils.js —
with docs/apps.md as the checklist for adding one (Videos/Music/Photos are
sketched there, not built).
Node side gained the matching enablement mechanism, mirroring
member_upload exactly: a roster setting, a signed apps_enabled op enforced
by _has_admin_authority, exposed in the handshake ack. Operators toggle
applications per group from Settings, which also gained a small reorder:
Invite, Pairing, Applications, Shared directories, Uploads, danger zone,
Your devices, Members.
Two bugs surfaced during the split, both missing an import across the new
file boundary and invisible to node --check or a module-load probe since
they only throw when the code path actually runs:
- group-page.js called onRefreshAuth on a stale-token handshake rejection,
but app.js never imported refreshAccessToken from hub-client.js — so a
brand new member (including a group's own creator) hit "Not a member of
this group" and the retry silently failed, throwing before it could
refresh the token.
- chat-app.js called getLocale() for message timestamps without importing
it from i18n.js. Opening Chat on a group with real messages threw mid-
render; uncaught, that appears to wedge Preact's render scheduler, so
every button on the page stopped responding until reload.
Caught the second class of bug with a proper no-undef audit across all
split files (a temporarily installed ESLint 9, since the system one is too
old to parse this codebase's syntax) rather than trusting grep. 827 tests
pass; 6 new ones cover the apps_enabled policy.

Add a status panel at the top of the Node page — always visible, even
before an MNP connection exists — showing the meshbay-node systemd
unit's own state (via `systemctl --user show`, main process only) with
Start/Stop/Restart controls. This is the piece the rest of the page
cannot provide: it has to work while the daemon is stopped or crash-
looping, which the MNP-based sections require the daemon to already
answer.
While touching node lifecycle: `reload` and `restart-daemon` in the
CLI shelled out to pgrep + SIGTERM/SIGHUP and respawned the process by
hand, logging to a hardcoded /tmp path. That pattern already SIGHUPed
a developer's own running node by accident once (see the old
test_cli_dispatch.py comment). Both now delegate to
`systemctl --user reload|restart meshbay-node`, which the unit already
supports correctly (ExecReload=, Restart=on-failure).

Desktop client guides new users through the full onboarding sequence
without a terminal: detect local node → start daemon (systemd with
direct-start fallback for dev) → link node key to hub → create group →
attach directories → gek-init → operator pair.
- node:detect returns configured field to distinguish missing vs stopped
- node:start tries systemctl first, checks is-active, falls back to
spawning the binary directly when the unit crashes (dev mode)
- probeNode() extracts the shared config→token→fetch pattern
- SetupWelcome on empty HomePage links to /create-group
- CreateGroupWizard step 0 handles node detection and start
- platform.js exposes node.installed() and node.start()
- 12 setup.* i18n keys added to all 10 locales
- Integration test for node:start fallback logic

Re-serve decrypted fMP4 video over HTTP on the LAN so a Chromecast can
play the stream. The relay runs in the Electron main process — same trust
boundary as downloads and MSE playback.
- cast-relay.js: HTTP server with BoxAccumulator (reassembles WebRTC
chunks into moof+mdat pairs), ring buffer, backpressure, finish() for
clean end-of-stream, fixed port range 19550-19553
- cast-chromecast.js: mDNS discovery (bonjour-service) + CASTV2 protocol
(castv2-client), connect/reload/disconnect lifecycle
- Seek-aware: relay restarts on every seek, Chromecast reloads new URL;
generation counter prevents stale async errors from killing active
restarts; landingPlayheadRef suppresses programmatic seeking events
- Device picker in video top bar with scan, device selection, copy-URL
fallback, and cast status indicator
- IPC bridge (main/preload/platform) for start/push/stop/finish/status/
discover/chromecastConnect/chromecastReload/chromecastDisconnect
- Phase 3 design doc for DLNA/Smart TV in docs/cast-smart-tv.md

Create Group wizard (Electron-only) consolidates 6 steps across 4 interfaces
into a single multi-step page: group creation on hub, node attachment, root
selection via folder picker, GEK initialization, and auto-pairing — all in one
flow. Browser SPA keeps its current behavior unchanged.
Public group support (Option A — GEK for all groups):
- All groups have GEK regardless of visibility; open-join groups auto-admit
via TOFU when join_policy is "open"
- Key rotation blocked for public groups (API guard + UI hidden)
- Hub signaling allows WebRTC offers for nodes hosting open-join groups even
when the caller isn't a member yet
- attach_group writes join_policy to node.toml
- Daemon loads GEK for all groups, not just private ones
- Known-device path in join_request now auto-admits to open-join groups
Node loopback API bridge (Electron IPC):
- node:detect, node:call, node:pairing-code IPC handlers in main process
- Renderer never sees tokens, paths, or keys (session token = physical access)
- platform.js node namespace for UI consumption
- Loopback endpoints: roots CRUD, member-upload toggle, reload
Bug fixes:
- Root change detection: removed premature ctx["roots"] updates from add_root
and remove_root that prevented indexer retarget on reload
- Duplicate offline message: global fallback now gated on !group
- Signaling membership check: fallback to open-join groups for non-members
Sidebar groups sorted by last_activity_at (most recent first):
- New Group.last_activity_at column with Alembic migration
- POST /v1/groups/{id}/activity endpoint, called on connect and chat send
- Client-side sort + throttled hub updates (1/min)

Node admin panel (NodePage) now covers every CLI operation over MNP:
group attach/detach, roster, member unpin, GEK rotate, denylist, reload.
Daemon hot-loads new groups and tears down removed ones on config reload
instead of requiring a full restart. Group attach/detach via MNP or
local API triggers an automatic reload so the group is live immediately.
Fixed GroupPage hang on first visit to a newly created group: the JWT
issued at login didn't include the new group, the node rejected with
not_a_member, and the token-refresh path returned without re-triggering
the connect effect (Boolean(token) didn't change). Now bumps retryKey
after a successful refresh so the effect re-runs with the fresh token.
NodePage marks groups hosted by the node but absent from the hub with a
"not on hub" badge so stale groups are visible and easy to remove.

A group where every member may add files stays the default. Some groups want a
library the operator curates, and until now the only way to get one was to
designate no upload root at all — which refuses the operator too.
**The node enforces it; the interface merely stops offering it.** The Upload
button in the Files toolbar and the paperclip in the chat composer both
disappear, which is a courtesy to the people who are not trying. The control is
`_do_file_upload` refusing with `member_upload_off`, so a member on an old tab,
or one speaking MNP directly, gets the same answer. There is a test for each,
and the enforcement test is in the node package rather than beside the UI one so
nobody reads the hidden button as the mechanism.
**Changing it is a signed operator instruction** — `OP_MEMBER_UPLOAD`, on the
same path as removing a member. An unsigned one would let any member turn it
back on and make the setting a suggestion. The transcript's subject is `on` or
`off`: what the operator is shown before signing has to name the outcome, not
the operation.
**It lives on the node**, in a new `group_settings` table in `roster.db`. Not
the hub, which has no business deciding who may write to someone else's disk.
Not `node.toml` either: that file is hand-written and full of comments recording
decisions, `ops.py` appends to it rather than round-tripping it through a
writer, and a setting toggled from a panel must not rewrite the operator's file
or need a restart. The value is cached in the group context because the upload
path is synchronous, and the signed operation updates both — storing it without
applying it would make the panel say one thing while the node did another.
**Absent means allowed**, at every layer: no row in the table, no key in the
context, no field in `handshake_ack`. An older node and an older client both
behave exactly as before, and upgrading never silently closes a group. Each of
those three has its own test, because they fail independently.
The operator is always exempt — otherwise turning it off locks them out of their
own node with a config file and a restart as the only way back. `is_node_admin`
was being computed in two places by then and is now one function, since two
copies of "is this the operator" is how the ack and the gate come to disagree.
A change reaches everyone already connected via `member_upload_ack`, so the
button goes without a reconnection. That message is both a broadcast and the
reply to the request that caused it, which is why the client does not return
early on it.
Docs updated for a cold start: draft-v6 §2.1b and change 9, a new "Where Phase
13 stands" section in CLAUDE.md recording what is built, deployed and still
missing, the module map row, and desktop-client-v1 §10b on the Settings tab and
where group settings live.
883 tests pass.

**The chat tab was 8px too tall, at every window size.** The panel is sized from
JS to `viewport - top - 16`, which puts its bottom 16px above the fold — but it
sits inside `.main`, which adds 24px of padding below it. Eight pixels of
document past the window, whatever the window. Measured at 700, 900 and 1200:
`scrollHeight` 708, 908, 1208.
This is the second one of these — the sign-in card was `.page-center` and
`.layout` each reserving `100vh - 52px` — so it is now measured in the suite
rather than reasoned about. `tests/harness/scroll_probe.py` renders the real
markup against the real stylesheet and **runs the real `fit()` lifted out of
`app.js`**: a copy of the formula in a test would go on passing after the
original changed, which is exactly the bug being guarded.
The fix does not encode 24 anywhere. The first pass runs as before, then the
leftover is measured and taken off, so anything added below the panel later is
absorbed the same way. Now `scrollHeight == innerHeight` at all three heights,
nothing below the fold, and the panel still fills the room it has — that last
one has its own test, because shrinking the chat to 240px would satisfy every
other assertion here and be useless.
The Settings tab was measured too and is **not** a bug: it fits at 1200px and
overflows only when its content is genuinely taller than the window.
**Group creation asked one question twice.** Visibility and admission were
separate selectors that could only ever be set together — picking Public reached
over and set the policy — and two of the four combinations are meaningless. The
API already refused public+invite with a 422, so the form could build a request
that could not succeed. Private+open was accepted and should not have been: a
group anyone may join that nobody can find is a listing with the listing
removed, since joining goes through the node and there is no link to pass
around.
So: one selector, "who can join", and the request derives the rest. The API now
refuses the other impossible pair as well, with a message that says which way to
resolve it. Six locale strings the visibility box owned are deleted rather than
left unread in ten files, and the two surviving descriptions now say what each
choice means for who can *find* the group — with the word "public" gone from the
page, nothing else would have said it, and someone would publish a group without
meaning to.
865 tests pass.
